thanks for the information. I am about to new birder. Reading about Sandhill Cranes, they talk about lesser and greater. It seems that most of the cranes on the West Coast are lesser, but my Audubon app says that they're actually are a mixture of lesser and greater. Can someone enlighten me?

I've heard from Gary Ivey and it is indeed a leucistic Lesser Sandhill Crane that he also saw while giving crane tours on Woodbridge Rd last week during the Crane Festival. He added that he believes it is the same bird that somebody sent him photos of from 2016!

Yesterday around 5:00 pm Rich and I saw a white crane fly into the property next to the Black Hole (across from the wetland). It was visibly smaller than the surrounding Sandhill cranes, coloring was white with some faint rust coloring on the head and body, and dark eyes. Not sure if it a leucistic, small, sandhill crane or a vagrant of some kind. I emailed photos to Gary Ivey as suggested by David Yee and am waiting to hear if it is a known bird in the area and if so, what it is.

Dear Birders:
A reminder that the Central Valley Birding Symposium is upcoming Nov 20-23 at the Stockton Hilton. One can check out the programming and registration information at cvbs.regfox.com/25home. There is a daily registration option as well as huge student discounts. Registration questions can be directed to the registrar Katie Steiner <katie...>
For those of you that have never attended, or are unaware of it, this is Stockton's very own birding event. This will be the 29th annual running of the event, and it serves as the annual meeting and biggest outreach of the highly regarded Central Valley Bird Club. Evening speakers include Ed Harper on Thur (High Arctic Birding), Erro Lenhert on Fri (Calif Condors) and Paul Bannick on Sat (Woodpeckers). The extremely popular bird Identification workshop is Friday afternoon. Saturday is loaded with UOP and UCD student research presentations, photography and drawing workshops, as well as a flycatcher ID workshop by Jon Dunn. Field trip offerings are available everyday.
There are now many bird festivals and birding events held annually world-wide, and the Central Valley Birding Symposium is considered one of the premier events by those that regularly attend them. The Symposium is highly educational, fun, and very community-oriented. Hope you can join.
Happy Fall Birding, David Yee CVBS Committee Member Stockton
