Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) (1)
- Reported Jan 10, 2026 16:04 by Steve Ellis
- Morro Creek mouth, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.8624411&<ll...>,-120.8624411 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S293639295 - Media: 1 Photo
- Comments: "One of only two birds (the other was a Western Gull) where the creek meets the beach (just downstream from the footbridge, very close to the hotspot pin). Originally spotted by Linda Baade, but several people in the group recognized it as a different and probably some kind of hooded gull. Shortly after discovery, it was promptly flushed by a person walking by, whereupon it flew west-southwest, out to sea, to the north of Morro Rock. It was large by hooded gull standards, with a large, dark bill that seemed to droop downwards somewhat. Smudgy ear patch that went around the back of the head. Mostly uniformly dark upper wings in flight. Tail mostly black. Others in the group will add additional photos."

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Jan 10, 2026 08:43 by Ann Stockert

- Comments: "Continuing….Originally found on 1/7 by Petra and Jack. Located in the same Walnut tree behind the DMV. Was working the string of sap holes but was skittish and moved around a lot. Appears to be a juvenile with messy brownish, white and black plumage with some red feathers beginning to show on the crown. Facial features showing whiteish stripe above and below the eye, and a small dark patch on the upper chest. No color either red or white showing on the throat. Back was mottled brown, black and white. Only saw briefly the white upper wing coverts in flight. Photos"

- Comments: "Continuing in walnut tree after flying all over like a maniac, zooming from tree to tree, sometimes up in a pine. I was happy when it finally landed on trunk of walnut tree. This bird had a lot of mottling, except on its yellow belly. The crown was red, the throat was whitish to white, and it had large vertical white wingbars partially hidden by its billowy belly fluff. This was an odd place to birdwatch. I made sure to look up that the dmv was closed so that I wouldn’t have any run-ins with the lot guard. No one was around. Photos"

- SLO DMV lot, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6694&<ll...>,-120.6694 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S293576410 - Comments: "Continuing juvenile plumaged bird matching other’s photos in the walnut tree 35.25731° N, 120.66985° W found by Petra C. Fairly small for a woodpecker, with a messy, dark back and darker blackish red on the cap. Very backlit when I saw it so the facial patterns were not too obvious. Flushed by a RSHA and flew into the eucalyptus near the construction equipment before I could get a photo. Got lots of shots of the culprit though."
