We ran the run back to back with the CBC so had two full days of birding. Good times! Run was completed by Bob Hunter, Janet Kelly and Anne Goff on January 4.
The Red-tailed Hawks made a comeback after a dismal December. Also, we got to add the Osprey, which is a first for me on a winter run (perhaps other runners got one in the past). A real highlight was once again seeing the beautiful partially leucistic Red-tailed Hawk on Agate Road (between Linn and Mountain View.) This time it was soaring with two other Red-Tails and a Golden Eagle. We also found the reliable Ferruginous Hawk on Ramsey Road, posing prettily on his preferred post. However, we were completely skunked on accipiters and the Burrowing Owl seems to have disappeared from Brophy Road. Perhaps he got rained out as the fields there were super soaked.
Final count: Red-tailed Hawk: 82 American Kestrel: 53 Northern Harrier: 7 Bald Eagle: 2 adults Golden Eagle: 2 Red-shouldered Hawk: 3 Ferruginous Hawk: 1 Merlin: 1 Peregrine Falcon: 1 Osprey: 1
Happy birding.

From 7:30-7:40 it was a continuous robin stream. Then the numbers started to dwindle and the robins began flying higher - around 200-300 feet. Small flocks began landing, resting, and then taking off, some flying within 25 feet. By 8:00 the flight was pretty much over. But while it lasted, it was as impressive as Pepper suggested - definitely worth seeing. Here's some directions to visit the spot where I was - coming north on I-5, take the Blackwell road exit and turn right and follow it for about 1.5 miles as it becomes Kirtland Road. You will pass a big industrial area on the left about 1/8 mile before the bridge over Bear Creek. Just after crossing the bridge, there is a quick turnout on the right -- an access parking point to Denham Wildlife area. I attached a general map and a satellite image to help locate it. I'm unsure if its the same spot as Pepper recommended, but it works.

Some were fairly low (<100 feet) that I could see were taking off from the
trees and gaining altitude. But lots were 150-200+ feet high and looked
like they were coming from far off and "headed for Dodge". And they were
all flying upstream East/Southeast, not downstream to the west. I saw the
spot on the opposite side of the road (its also evident in the photograph)
but at 7:25 am the traffic was heavy both behind me at and towards me I
didn't want to stop to make a left and hold up traffic while waiting for
opposing traffic to clear. I think that your spot, however, would be better
- I was tempted to go down a ways and turn around and come back to it.

Date: 1/4/26 9:55 am From: Pepper Trail <pepper.trail...> Subject: [RV Birds] Huge numbers of robins on the Medford CBC, with a request
Terrence Phillipe and I covered Area L on the Medford CBC on Saturday. As always, we began on Gold Ray Road near the river to see the morning fly-out of robins, which has often been dramatic. This year we estimated 15,000 from 7:30 to 8:15.
In the late afternoon, we went to the Kirtland Road crossing over Bear Creek for the evening fly-out. We did our best to keep track from 3:45-5:00 PM. Our best - and conservative - estimate was 65,000. This was based on an estimated 1000-1500/minute from 4:00-4:30, and 500-800/minute for the 3:45-4:00 and 4:30-5:00 periods. It was overwhelming.
There's no way to know how many, if any, of the dawn 15,000 were part of the evening 65,000. The dawn birds were mostly leaving to the northwest; the evening birds were mostly coming in from the southeast, suggesting that at least some of the birds were different.
So here is a request for any Medford birders who like to get up and about early. It would be great to have a morning fly-out count at the Kirtland Road/Bear Creek area, to compare with our Gold Ray dawn fly-out. There is a big safe pull-out just on the Medford side of the Bear Creek bridge on Kirtland Road, which we where we did our count. On Saturday, the robins started to fly out at Gold Ray in good numbers at around 7:30, with some movement beginning around 7:15. The main fly-out at Gold Ray was over by 8:15.
It really is an amazing spectacle, and well worth getting out early. We found the only way to try to tally the numbers was to try to estimate birds passing overhead per 30 seconds, and double that to get the numbers/minute.
If anyone takes this on, please post your results on Rogue Valley Birds. Thanks!

I add my condolences to Norm's family, and my appreciation for his life. As
a member of the Falcons Birdathon team, I always looked forward to
competing (and trash-talking) with the Binosaurs -- though as a gentleman,
Norm was more given to self-deprecation than to trash-talk. One of my
favorite memories of Norm is hawk-watching at Modoc Point, where he always
brought his "marmot" - a toy stuffed mammal of indeterminate species raised
on a pole to attract strafing runs by migrating hawks. Like the "marmot,"
Norm was well-padded, tolerant, good-natured, and always welcome wherever
he went. He was a great member of our birding community, and will be sadly
missed.

Thank you, Frank, for passing along this sad news to the birding community.
As fate may have it, I was actually driving south through Jackson County on Dec 26th and thinking of Norm. As we passed MedCo access to Lost Creek Lake, I commented to my wife about a fond memory of Norm Barrett and Mountain Quail.
During my brief tenure in Medord about 10 years ago, I had the pleasure of being an honorary member of the BINOSAURS, an annual Bird-A-Thon team comprised of long-time Rogue Valley birders Norm Barrett, Howard Sands, Gary Shaffer and Jim Livadaudais. We were leaving Lost Creek Lake, heading to Ashland and we had missed Mountain Quail. Norm piped up that once he had seen a flock of Mountain Quail fly across the highway and maybe we would get lucky. That drew a few chuckles and smart aleck comments from the group members, but in less than a minute, it happened; the one and only sighting of MOUNTAIN QUAIL of the day with a pair flying across the highway! We were all incredulous and grinning, like we had just thrown up a Hail Mary half-court shot and heard the ball swish through the net. Birding with this group was always a hoot; the side conversations, stories, yarns and good-natured ribbing were almost as important as the birdwatching...almost.
Norman was kind and generous with a great sense of humor and was always a pleasure to be around and bird with. His patience and vast knowledge of various aspects of the natural world was much appreciated. He will be missed.
Good birding,
Russ Namitz

Greetings, All. Sooney and I just returned from SoCal and were introduced to a wonderful birding environment, the San Joaquin Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary. While there, we spotted a Swinhoe’s White-eye for the first time and, according to the linked article from the Audubon Society, it may just show up here. I’ve attached my photo of this non-native bird and a link to the article FYI.
TLDR: please break up your counts by each location you visit, and use hotspots where they exist!! Checklists that carry on for multiple miles or cross multiple habitat types will be thrown out! Please help make your data as valuable as it can be!
