A reminder that the annual Central Valley Birding Symposium is coming up in several weeks, November 21-24 at the Stockton Hilton. If you're interested and haven't already done so, there is still plenty of time to register and attend all or any portion of this year's event filled with stellar speakers and programs. And yes, there are still rooms available at the Stockton Hilton reserved for the CVBS attendees using the discount code of CVBS24. But hurry if you are interested, this code is only good through November 8th!
Ed Harper will be giving a new program on Birds of the Air on Thursday evening. Noted evolutionary biologist Danielle Whittaker will speak enchantingly with humor on her recent discoveries on a bird's ability to smell and how influential it is in their lives on Friday. And longtime favorite Joe Morlan will celebrate warblers on Saturday evening. Among many other programs will be the return of the amazing bird specimen workshop led by Andy Engilis of UCD on Saturday afternoon. And, of course, the many outstanding fieldtrips.

Hello County Birders, Quick note to let folks know I located a White-throated Sparrow yesterday in Markleeville. It was foraging with an immature White-crowned Sparrow around the picnic tables between the creek and the sheriff's station. I also got to add a Belted Kingfisher to my cumulative Alpine list.
Elsewhere in Alpine County, I netted a Great-blue Heron at Indian Creek Reservoir, a Ferruginous Hawk along Diamond Valley Road, and a couple Woodhouse's Scrub-Jays along Mud Lake Road. I would welcome a second opinion on the jay IDs since California Scrub-Jays also appear to be in the area. https://ebird.org/checklist/S201343686
While at Indian Creek, I tried hard to locate either a Clark's Grebe or a Greater Scaup, without success. Nothing else particularly raire on the lake.
