Subject: [sd-birds] To Orman and WW Report
We birded Whitewood Valley to Orman and return on Friday 7.10.26.
Temperatures climbed to 97 F and birding was poor.  All of the small
roadside ponds were dry and Belle Fourche reservoir (Orman Dam) was
lower because of irrigation waters pouring outbound into the canals
and.  Raptor sightings included 4 Red-tailed Hawks and one Prairie
Falcon. Other sightings of interest were Eastern and Western Kingbirds,
Says Phoebe, a flock of Gray Partridge. and one Grasshopper Sparrow.
Our "bird of the day" was 25 or more Upland Sandpipers along Weisman
Road from WW Valley to SD 34.  Attached is a picture of one of the
Sandpipers.

Our feeders 1.5 miles south of Whitewood continue to have lots if
birds.  Species of note include Bullock's Oriole, Indigo and Lazuli
Buntings, and Western Tanager  .  Last week we had five Common
Nighthawks in the evening.

Subject: [sd-birds] SFBC field trip results
Today a dozen birders joined the monthly field trip of the Sioux Falls Bird Club. We began with a quick stint in the southeast part of Sioux Falls to look for Mississippi Kites or Broad-winged Hawks that are nesting, but missed both. From there we proceeded to Touch the Sky Prairie, a national wildlife refuge just over the border in Minnesota. This is an excellent prairie with lots of quartzite outcroppings, where we found quite a few grassland species like Grasshopper Sparrow, Dickcissel, Sedge Wren, Bobolink, and others. There was a stream running through the area we walked, which formed a small waterfall and some wetland habitat that had Swamp Sparrows and many Common Yellowthroats as well.
After the prairie walk, we stopped and enjoyed some shade for a bit at Palisades State Park back in SD, with some singing woodland species.
Thanks to everyone who attended today. Our next club outing is scheduled for Saturday, August 22. We will be participating/birding at Prairie Fest at Good Earth State Park for at least a little while that morning, but may do a shorebird trip after that, so stay tuned for more details.

Subject: [sd-birds] Raven, owls - Pennington County
Yesterday I was monitoring a Burrowing Owl nesting colony on private land
south of New Underwood when a Common Raven came flying/croaking by. Now
that this species has established itself in the Black Hills, I would expect
more sightings in the surrounding plains. Of course they could be nesting
somewhere on private land on the plains, especially with all the
transmission line/cell tower nesting platforms that we have built for them.

Concerning Burrowing Owls, now is a great time to view the owl families.
The chicks are old enough to be out of the burrow and are busy practicing
their flying skills when they aren't chasing after their parents for food.

Subject: [sd-birds] LEOW Nest
The owlets left the nest last weekend and have been in the "branching" stage this week, and have been rigorously exploring the trees near where the nest itself is. As far as I can tell there were only ever 3 owlets in the clutch(which seems a bit on the lower side for LEOW) but they are all growing fast and have handled the recent severe weather episodes well. The parents are doing a great job of watching over them and keeping them well fed.

The Sioux Falls Bird Club will hold its July field trip a week from tomorrow, on Saturday July 11. We will meet at the Outdoor Campus East (4500 S Oxbow Ave) at 7:30 a.m. to organize carpooling. Our first stop will be to the Tuthill neighborhood in southeast Sioux Falls to look for the Mississippi Kites that are presumably nesting in the area again (they continue to be observed, though no nest has been found yet this year, that I'm aware of). Then we will proceed to Touch the Sky Prairie near Luverne, MN to look for grassland birds, and will come back to SD for a stop at Palisades State Park near Garretson.
We will aim to return to the OC by midday. You do not need to be a club member to attend, all are welcome.

The gray cat birds built a new nest and I had seen them building it but I
left them alone. Well I decided to just walk by the shrub that it was in
and there's the nest and it's beautiful and it has one blue egg. Which
makes me think about the first nest. It had a white speckled egg. I'm
thinking a cowbird predated the first nest and then something got the nest.

This nest is more protected with more growth around it so hopefully it does
okay. I suppose I could put like a chicken wire fence around it or
something but I think raccoons would just climb up and over it.

Usually if you want to see Missouri River sandbar birds from the shore, you
have to go to areas downstream of Yankton. But with the river being
extremely low, a large sandbar has emerged near the north end of Mobridge.
The other day it was loaded with birds, including four species of terns,
three species of gulls, and a lot of Piping Plovers. If water levels remain
low, this spot may be an interesting birding spot over the next few weeks.

If you go, note that one is looking west at the sandbar so mornings are
probably better for viewing. And a spotting scope helps for bird ID.

So I put up a lot of nest boxes that are about 6 in square and about 10 in
deep on my property in Sanborn County. I mostly use them to trap starlings
but I also am hoping to get great Crested fly catchers to nest in them.
Well I've been seeing red-headed woodpeckers hanging out on the boxes so I
put Aspen shavings in a couple boxes. Well one of them they excavated and I
just opened it up and they have four eggs. Very exciting.

It's interesting because there's a dead cottonwood right next to where they
are nesting and I saw them excavating the cottonwood tree. I don't know why
they didn't nest there unless a starling got them. Anyway. Hopefully
they're successful but we'll see because I have a lot of house wrens and
they may destroy the eggs.

We stopped briefly today at Bear Butte Lake.  The lake has receded
further since our last visit.  South entrance was closed, but from the
North RV area we found on the lake only a few coots and no other waterfowl.

We continued to have lots of activity at our feeders 1.5 miles south of
Whitewood with 19 species at the feeders or along the creek.  Highlights
include Indigo Bunting, Western Tanager, Rose-breasted and Black-headed
Grosbeaks and a Western Wood Pewee 6/23.  The Black-headed Grosbeaks are
the most resourceful and have learned to feed on our hanging suet stick,
feed upside down on our upside down suet block, dine at the hanging
feeders and eat grape jelly we put out for the Tanagers. We still have a
Great Blue Heron flying along Whitewood Creek and Turkey Vultures flying
overhead at times.

Also heard some jays harassing something, and upon investigation it turns out there was an Eastern Screech Owl pair not more than 80yds from the LEOW nest trilling to eachother. Red morph male and grey morph female that were present in the same location over the winter, was pretty surprised to see them sharing territory with the LEOWs and now I'm wondering if they have a nest nearby. Went back today and the red morph was roosting in a tree and the gray morph seemed to be in a cavity that I couldn't quite get eyes on, softly trilling.

Well something already destroyed the cat bird nest. Pulled it out of bush.
I blame raccoons. Frustrating.

I'm my southern sanborn county farm I have cat birds that built a nest. I
observed her on nest with my spotting scope. The Phoebe's have fledged. I
see birds pumping tails and matching the general look of a Phoebe. The
blue grosbeak is back. Wonder where they nest. Saw a lark sparrow in tree
so assume they are nesting. I'm inundated with house wrens. Red headed
woodpeckers are everywhere. Good times.

Subject: [sd-birds] LEOW nest update
A few months back I posted about discovering a Long-eared Owl nest site, it turned out like the female was actually testing different nest sites and ended up not using that particular nest. About a month ago I found that she finally settled on another nest and began incubating eggs(assumed initially because she would not leave the nest for any reason) and last weekend I saw the first signs that the eggs had hatched. This morning I got my first view of two of the owlets, but I'm unsure how many total there are yet. I'm shocked the pair ended up choosing the location they did, but I won't elaborate on that too much because I'd prefer to keep the location as secret as possible for now as I do not want the Minneapolis birder circus to show up and crowd the owls.
