Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Snow Geese
We had a major flight of Snow Geese come over our area yesterday. Upon arriving home around 3 PM yesterday I heard an unfamiliar sound. I finally found a huge V of Snow Geese headed West. The birds were flying so high they were hard to find and count, especially looking up through the trees. I guessed there were well over a hundred. Shortly thereafter another wave came through probably of equal number. I was in and out moving firewood so did not see all of the waves. The final group I saw was the smallest by a large factor and I still counted at least 40 birds. While not coming by on Christmas count day they were at least within count week.
We had one of the least productive counts that Ann and I have had since moving back to Indiana 25 years ago. We only had 30 species for the day the most interesting of which were the two Meadowlarks we saw in a field with 30 Starlings. Also of note were the 10 Common Mergansers that have been hanging around since the lake iced over, the Red breasted Nuthatch that has been a regular at the feeder for a couple of weeks and the immature Bald Eagle that showed up recently. In addition to the Geese we had two Mute Swans and 6 Ring necked Ducks visit during the icy period during count week.
The Johnson County Christmas count was held on Dec 21st.

Seeing the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Jack’s feeders on Sat, Dec 20, was a thrill. The Purple Finches (2 males and a female) were first-of-season for me as well. We saw a Golden-crowned Kinglet earlier in the week. Jack reported seeing a Fox Sparrow yesterday (Sun, Dec 21).

A male and a female Hairy Woodpecker have been more frequent visitors to my backyard feeders recently. And, my first White-throated Sparrow for the yard has stopped by a few times. The Red-breasted Nuthatch continues. I witnessed another Cooper’s Hawk checking out the feeding area on Dec 14.

Streams of crows have been passing over from north to south in the early a.m. and then south to north in the late afternoon. As expected, the recent snow brought more birds to my feeders—including 80 Mourning Doves on Dec 13.

Unless otherwise noted, all birds were heard/seen from my yard.

bird sp. 9 At 2:45pm I noticed 9 vultures hunkered down in a tree behind a house across and down the street. The birds being hunkered down, the dim light, and that it was snowing made it difficult to ID the birds. Two appeared to be Black Vultures. No guess on the IDs of the other seven vultures.

Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS | 🦉📋 Indiana Audubon's 2025 "Birders' Lists" Article
*Indiana Audubon is seeking your listing-year totals for the next annual
"Birder's Lists" article in the Indiana Audubon Quarterly, publishing in
May 2026. Learn more about this article at **indianaaudubon.org/birders-list
<http://indianaaudubon.org/birders-list>.*

*Feb. 1, 2026, is the deadline for submissions.*

* * *

*FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS*

*How do I submit my list totals?*
It's easy! You can submit your totals via an online form at
*https://forms.gle/Ayd7UzxRxrwAzhjk9
<https://forms.gle/Ayd7UzxRxrwAzhjk9>*. Follow the prompts for each type
of list.

*Why should I publicize my list totals?*
The "Birders' Lists" article traditionally allows Indiana birders to share
their listing milestones. You don't need to be a seasoned or
well-traveled birder to submit a list for this annual feature. Everyone is
encouraged to contribute their lists, large or small, local or otherwise.

*What kinds of list totals can I share?*
You can share totals from your life and year lists for the World, the North
America listing region, the American Birding Association (ABA) Area,
Indiana, Indiana Counties (2022 totals only), and your property with us. If
you keep track of an alternative list (e.g., zero-carbon, five-mile radius,
etc.), you can share it in the highlights section on the form's last page.

*What if I only want to share totals for one list?*
That's AOK. Feel free to share your totals for a category (or several
categories) that are most meaningful to you. You don't have to submit
totals for every type of list.

*What time period should my totals represent?*
The totals you provide should cover species added during the 2025 calendar
year (Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2025). The IAS only requires the number of birds
seen, not the species lists.

*I** would like to share a note about the birding milestones I achieved in
2024. Is this allowable?*
Yes! You can include written text about your birding highlights on the
form's last page under the "2025 HIGHLIGHTS" section.

*Do I need to be an Indiana Audubon Society (IAS) member to submit my
totals?*

Membership is encouraged! 🙂 If you are not already an IAS member, you can
join at indianaaudubon.org/membership. Your membership plays a crucial role
in supporting Indiana Audubon's mission, contributing to the conservation
and appreciation of birds and their habitats in the state.

*I have questions or feedback. Who should I contact?*

Questions about countable or review species, list types, and other topics
can be directed to <info...>, or simply respond to this email.
