11/19. FYI, news about the McKinney NWR at Long Beach Blvd (“Warehouse Pond”) in Stratford: Vandals recently “bulldozed” down the wooden guardrails surrounding the lot. So the lot will at least temporarily be closed until repairs can take place. A staffer told me visitors can park along the roadway curb, or perhaps it will be OK to park in the Amazon lot at # 600 across the street.

Date: 11/19/24 7:04 am From: David Mathieu via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] CT Rarity Roundup 2024 |
Hello CT birders!
We are clearly in rarity season! Good birds in the last few weeks include Western Kingbird, Gray Kingbird, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Swainson's Hawk, Sandhill Crane, Sedge Wren, Pink-footed Goose, and Greater White-fronted Goose.
In the past few years Aidan Kiley organized an informal "Rarity Roundup" - an event where birders commit to search locations specifically to turn up vagrants. The goal is to get people out searching a variety of areas, especially those that are rarely or never covered! Vagrants can show up anywhere so checking a random roadside thicket or meadow could turn up something interesting.
This year, Aidan Kiley and I are organizing this for November 23rd-24th.
To organize this, we have created a Google Sheet (the Google Drive version of Excel).
If you are interested in helping (even if you only have the time to check a quick spot or two!) we encourage anyone to click the link and add your name, locations you’re planning to visit, and, if known/desired, dates you’ll check the areas and specific targets you may have in mind! We also encourage people to do this with some friends because the more eyes the better. The Google Sheet can be edited by anyone who clicks the link.
Some species to keep in mind: Pink-footed Goose, Barnacle Goose, Brown Booby, Painted Bunting, Western Kingbird and other western kingbird species, Harris’s Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Western Tanager, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Townsend’s Warbler, Sage Thrasher, Wood Stork and Western Flycatcher.
If you find anything interesting, please document with photos or audio (if possible) and report as soon as possible!
Next year Aidan and I are going to organize a more formal event, including areas, teams, and more community discussion/planning. Stay tuned for that!

11/15-Red head duck continues at The big pond at Avon Fisher meadows, with a small mixed flotilla. At 12:30 PM he was sleeping for about an hour but clearly identifiable, then he woke up and paddled with the Hooded Mergansers and Ruddy Ducks. Birders who came to look with just binoculars seemed frustrated and left, but it was quite clear in a 40 X power spotting scope.

Some great birds seen at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison this morning.
In the Nature Center lot there were two Lapland Longspurs, one associating with the Horned Lark flock, the other on its own. Two Snow Buntings joined the larks later in the morning; always beautiful to see!
A Lesser Yellowlegs, rare for the date, continues in the Boulder Pond together with four Greater Yellowlegs and several Dunlin.
On the sound there were a few Eider ducks and some Bonaparte’s Gulls at Meig’s Point and Paul Desjardins just called to tell me that he had several Forster's Terns offshore in a feeding frenzy with some gulls.
To top it off, the American Bittern, which has been seen on and off over the last week or two, occasionally shows itself on the north edge of the Boulder Pond. Always a cool bird to see!
Please note: The extremely high tide was flooding much of the Nature Center lot and roadway when I was leaving the park.

Cold temperatures brought the migrants down to the Lighthouse today. The 317 raptor total included 144 Turkey Vultures, 59 Red-shouldered Hawks and 50 Red-tailed Hawks. They flew in from the E and the beach, and cleared to the NW in an orderly fashion. There was another great morning flight which included 11,200 Common Grackles, 11 Pine Siskin, and 11 Cave Swallows. Most Cave Swallows were in the morning, but there was one around 12 pm. NE winds will be a bit lighter tomorrow. It's still maybe worth checking in on tomorrow's morning flight.

We are moving and have to dispose of a huge number of books. Included are several bird books including my first bird book, a two-volume National Geographic Birds of America from about 1940, original Peterson Guide, several European bird guides, Raymond Ditmars Snakes of the World, Ditmars Reptiles of the World and several other books about birding other areas like Seattle and the Texas coast. They are free to the first person or organization who wants them and will pick them up before they go to the local library in a few days. I would rather see them taken by a birder who would enjoy them, especially seeing all the former names like Pigeon Hawk and Duck Hawk and Sharp's Seedeater. Also free are a Bausch & Lomb Discoverer telescope and tripod.

Date: 11/10/24 5:39 pm From: Justin Hamlin via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] GRAY KINGBIRD |
Today I had the dumb luck of stumbling upon Connecticut's fourth record of GRAY KINGBIRD. I was at Milford Point, going out past the houses to the hook point, when the bird appeared on the top of a bare tree. I didn't notice it being different at first, as I was basically looking into the sun. However, as I took a photo or 2, I noted it had quite the bill. I got a few more shots, aiming to try to get a better angle but trying not to disturb it. However, it took off and flew towards the river, in the direction of Knapp's Landing. I lost sight of it over the river, so it really could have gone anywhere, or even kept flying straight and just kept going past the airport.
Many birders went out in force to attempt to relocate, but to no avail. Hopefully the bird stuck around and can be refound tomorrow!

Date: 11/10/24 9:15 am From: Chuck Imbergamo via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Re: Rarity month |
I have not seen it reported here, but those following the GroupMe groups know about the incursion of CAVE SWALLOWS into our state that began yesterday.
Numerous birds have been spotted at Lighthouse Point, Hammonasset Beach State Park and several other coastal locations around our state. Some of the birders who have seen the birds have gotten some great photos. Check the Rare Bird Alert on eBird and look for checklists with photos; some of them are excellent! https://ebird.org/alert/summary?sid=SN35614&sortBy=obsDt&o=desc
At least three of them were seen by me and many other birders this morning at Lighthouse Point. Due to the winds, many others are likely still around. Eyes to the skies!

We had many visitors today, some from Mystic CT and some from New York City-admiring our grounds and birds. We also got 2 new "residents"- 2 snakes- Truffles (hognose snake) and Tolstoy (Russian black rat snake). Stop in to see them on your next visit. On the marsh: (viewed with scope & bins)- about 100 Canada Geese, 200 Brant, the family of Mute swans (6), about 50 Black Bellied plovers on a mudflat, 15 American Black ducks and 1 D.C. Cormorant who flew over and then decided to land in the water and go fishing. On the grounds and feeders: 2 Tufted titmice, 7 House finches & 5 House sparrows -some bathing, 2 White throated sparrows, 2 White breasted nuthatches, 1 Blue Jay and 2 Chickadees, 1 Cardinal and a singing Carolina wren. Hi John – your birds sound like Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers to me, but that doesn’t match your description of their size. I have also heard Downy Woodpeckers making a similar sounds, so perhaps that is a possibility.

Thank you again, Chuck for challenging us to get out there and do some fun birding! I was only able to get out to one of the gardens (it felt like a sparrow-palooza that day, so many birds!), but already looking forward to visiting more next season. :)\
\
I do have a request for anyone who participated - if you took photos during the Community Garden Harvest Challenge and would be willing to have them shared to the Connecticut Ornithological Association’s social media (Facebook, Instagram, website) please let me know. I’d love to highlight these fun spaces across the state! You can send photos to me here: <instagram...> Could be photos of the birds you saw, the gardens themselves, or even a photo of you out there birding in those spaces.
Happy Birding!

Between the pollinator meadow I’m working on, my community garden plot, and obviously birding, I’m at Allen’s most days but this friendly challenge inspired me to catch many sunrises there and enjoy late afternoons sitting back in my Adirondack chair searching the skies. I found some good birds but perhaps the biggest surprise for me was a flyover flock of 58 Brandt- a first for me at Allen’s thanks to this challenge!

Sadly I heard gunshots this morning as well on the Windsor Locks Canal State Park path. I believed they were coming from other side of river. Probably should’ve left in hindsight…
Between yesterday and today had 29 species including:
2 Bald Eagles perched high overlooking river
Peregrine Falcon - quite vocal
Ring billed gulls on river, Mallards, Wood ducks on canal. The large flocks of geese usually present have moved on.
10-15 Cedar Waxwings feasting on berries
Pileated, Hairy, Downy, Red Bellied Woodpeckers
Winter Wren and vocal Carolina Wren
Tufted titmouse, Black-capped Chickadee, White throat sparrows, White breasted nut hatch

South Windsor: Station 43 (from Newberry Rd) 11/4/24. I went to look for the Sanderling that's been seen there. Did not see it, but was not able to spend much time because someone started shooting too close by. Bad idea to go there right now except Sunday - with hunting allowed on the adjoining property. I managed to quick scan about 9 American Coot & 10 Wood Duck before the birds & I fled. -- *Patrice Favreau* *Ellington*

Date: 11/2/24 3:02 pm From: Joe Bear via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Community garden harvest - Final results |
Thank you Chuck for coming up with a clever way of getting people out to bird their local community gardens. I of course have the luxury of having Allen’s Meadow in my backyard and October is without a doubt the best month of the year to bird Allen’s.

At least 4 new eBird hotspots were added to our Connecticut hotspot list, thanks to the birders who participated in the contest. Several new patch birds were added to patch lists during the month as well. I hope that the birders who participated in the challenge will share any interesting experiences or what they learned or enjoyed along the way!
Personally, the contest helped me focus on birding my local patch with extra intensity! It also paid off in the sense that I found a few species that were new to my patch list and some birds new to the patch itself. Shortly, I will post some of my checklists which include photos of birds seen during my visits.
I hope that CT Birders will keep on birding these beautiful places going forward. Using eBird and keeping a patch list is fun and usually keeps your birding local - making it 'greener' than chasing birds. To find eBird hotspots near you, use the 'Explore Hotspots' tool in eBird: https://ebird.org/hotspots

Congratulations, David!
I think up to a couple of years ago, this was a rare milestone. But it seems to be a workable goal for good and active birders now. I imagine the new technology helps with this a lot.
Good luck to any in the 290's!

There are not one but two WESTERN KINGBIRDS at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison right now (~9:45 AM).
Being seen in the same area as the Western Kingbird was a few years ago - the Cedar Island lawn area.
A number of us have checked closely and both these birds appear to be Western and not one of the even rarer species.

CT Birders -
Yesterday marked week four of our community garden harvest competition. The number of new birds found leveled off somewhat as the warmer than usual weather didn’t push many new birds into our area.
Still, several spots enjoyed their first Hermit Thrushes, Brown Creepers and Purple Finches. Birders at two hotspots logged their first Fox Sparrows of the season as well, those birds being on the early side!
Below are the new totals as of yesterday, sorted by the greatest numbers of species found so far:
Wilton - Allen’s Meadows - 102
Madison - Bauer Farm - 97

The weather is supposed to be mild so it will easy to bird over the next few days. Mansfield, Wallingford and West Hartford all have a shot at overtaking Woodbridge Community Gardens for third place, and anyone can add a significant number of birds to their hotspot list with a little effort!
Get harvesting!!!

Date: 10/26/24 7:28 pm From: George Wallace via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Re: Purple Finch question |
Hey Joe,
According to Peter Pyle's Identification Guide to North American Birds (the
definitive guide to aging and sexing), most *known *young birds in their
first year and into their second calendar year of life appear female-like
and cannot be reliably sexed. This means that in the field, at this time of
year, when we see female-like birds, we cannot be sure of their age which
also means we cannot be sure of their sex. A female-like bird could be an
adult female, an immature female or an immature male. However, birds like
the one you describe with the faint pink wash can be sexed as young males
or older females - IF you know their age, which in this case you do not -
unless you have the bird in the hand. In the hand, you would be able to
assess the shape of the tail feathers and the degree of skull
pneumatization. If the bird had pointed rectices and an incompletely
pneumatized skull, it would be a young bird which you could then reliably
call a young male. If the bird had rounded tail feathers and a completely
pneumatized skull, it would be an adult and the pinkish tinge tinge would
suggest an older female, one that is in its third calendar year of life or
older. If you had a female-like bird in the hand that was aged as a
young bird, you wouldn't know whether it was a male or a female. So, your
bird is either a young male or an older female, but we cannot be sure which
without being able to determine its age.
Hopefully I explained that reasonably well, but let me know if I can
clarify anything.
Very best, George
George Wallace

There was a second-of-the-season light morph Rough-legged Hawk and yet another Red-headed Woodpecker at today's (10/26) hawk watch. There were also 168 diurnal raptors and several more non-migrants. There are many (15-20 today) Hermit Thrushes in the Park. Thrushes, Towhees, and White-throated Sparrows are feeding on invasive euonymus berries.
Light NW winds are forecast for tomorrow so we're hoping for a solid morning flight and a few more hawks.

Thanks Chuck - this has been fun but sad to say Colonial Park in Sherman up here in the hills has been 90% demolished - only a couple of tall sunflowers and a bunch of zinnias left standing, and a patch of what looks like lettuce surrounded by bare earth. Not a single bird today. Guess we're done!Angela

CT Birders -
Yesterday marked week three of our community garden harvest competition. Plenty of new birds were found, with five or more species being added to several garden lists last week. A few community gardens had no new checklists last week. Don’t despair if your garden isn’t near the top of the list - fall birding is fun and you never know what you will find.
The weather is excellent and we have over a week to go to harvest some more birds!
