Thanks Paul - no I did not see that wingbeat - and I am very familiar with it - the bird flew straight down at a slow angle without flapping at all, then banked slightly out of sight to the stream, so maybe that was its last glide down before landing. Room fairly soundproof so heard nothing - but when I walked down there, a wood duck flushed further upstream - but they don't have white stripes in their wings, at least in my experience - and the bird I saw was smaller and definitely not a duck.

Angela, maybe early but it could very well have been a Spotted Sandpiper. The main point here is did you notice a stiff wingbeat which is characteristic of the species? This is but one example of being able to identify a species even if you got a poor look of it’s plumage.

Since moving to Windsor Locks our “backyard” is a huge parking lot abutting CT River, Windsor Locks Canal and park
Recorded 30 species this morning the most since last summer.
Notably several small groups of American Goldfinch,
an Eastern Pheobe, groups of Fish and American crows and Hooded Mergansers..
This is the third time Merlin recently detected an Eastern Bluebird and Killdeer - with no sign of them.
Coincidentally a Northern Mockingbird is detected right before these birds are detected. 🤣 I’m suspicious! So maybe only 28 species?!

For a time during my tenure at American Bird Conservancy, Victor served on
our Board of Directors. He was a solid guy with a keen interest in linking
bird watching with conservation. Among other activities, he brought ABC and
Tucson Audubon together to buy the Patton property in Patagonia, AZ. It was
long known among birders as a hotspot, especially for hummingbirds, and
when the Pattons passed away, Victor was very focused on it not being lost
to the birding community. We were able to buy it and it is now wholly owned
and managed by Tucson Audubon.
Very best to all,

Date: 3/22/25 3:34 pm From: closcalz--- via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Two (fun) signs of spring this morning |
There's signs of spring everywhere now, of course, but we were pleased to see two signs of spring this morning:
Observation # 1: a pair of Wood Ducks came to check out a hole in an oak tree in our front yard as a potential nesting site. The female spent several minutes looking into the hole and even went into the hole as best she could (only her tail was visible). The male perched on a branch a few feet above her. The nearest body of water to our house is about mile away, through the woods. But I've read that Wood Ducks prefer nesting sites away from the edge of the water. The ducklings drop out of the nest cavity to the ground when they are ready to fledge and then follow their mother to the water, walking through the woods. A treacherous journey to be sure. We'd be delighted to have Wood Ducks nesting in our yard, but we aren't sure the hole is deep enough.
Observation #2: A flock of turkeys were out in a field this morning fairly close to the road. There were 4 males displaying persistently while the females stood by looking at the displaying males. Turkeys are amazing creatures, and this early spring courtship behavior is interesting to watch.
Spring is a delight!

Wildlife Series – April 29, 2025: An Introduction into Neotropical Birding like no other…Trinidad and Tobago!
Apr 29 🦋 Wildlife Series 🦆 Tue 7:30 pm
Guest Speaker Sir Gerard RamsawakMcAuley Residence Auditorium at 275 Steele Rd, West Hartford. The Neotropics boasts of about 3,751 bird species which makes it the most biodiverse region in the world. This represents 90 families, 28 of which are endemic to this region. It spans over the Americas and the Caribbean with its richest diversity found in Central and South America. There is one Caribbean Island that have been a well-kept secret which rivals its mainland counterpart’s diversity, and it is Trinidad & Tobago. Trinidad being just about 50 x 39 miles and Tobago 25 x 5 miles (totaling 1,981 square miles), combined they boast of about 489 bird species representing 74 different families.Sir Gerard Ramsawak will be talking about this rich diversity of neotropical birds, its accessibility and the rich flora and fauna of this twin island state to support it. He will highlight some of the sought after species and what makes them so unique. He will also talk about the logistics of Trinidad and Tobago as birdwatching destinations, featuring some of the best birding spots. If you have any questions, contact Frances D’Amico <frandamico525...> 203–715–631

Hi All,
With spring coming and woodcock displaying both evening and morning, I felt this might be a good time to send out this request. I lost a volunteer last year who had been running 3 woodcock routes for me. These routes are run once a year, between 20 April and 10 May. They are roadside surveys that are 3.6 miles in length and are run at dusk. The survey itself takes 36 minutes to run. The 3 routes that need to be picked up are in Bozrah, Hampton, and Hebron.
If there is anyone out there that would be interested in doing one or more of these routes, and would commit to doing it every year, please respond to me at:
<min.huang...>
thanks!

This evening I had the chance to check for Woodcocks at the Frederick White Farm in Durham. My visit really paid off, with a number of Woodcocks ‘peenting’ and doing aerial displays.
Fortunately there was no wind and very little traffic and I was able to get some decent recordings of the action. Interested birders may give them a listen on my checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S217992625
White Farm has been a great spot but it is always worth getting out to check any local fields, especially those with some wetland edge. This is the best time of year to hear Timberdoodles!

Sunday, March 16th at 2 p.m.
Darien Library invites you to meet author and therapist, Pamela Lowell, as she talks about her new book, My Summer With Ospreys: a Therapist's Journey Toward Hope, Community, and Healing our Planet.
In the book, trauma specialist Lowell, expertly guides us to the connections between therapy, the life of an artist, and the natural world as a place of healing.
In 2023, Lowell, an avid birder, jumped at the chance to accompany Mass Audubon in their weekly Osprey nest monitoring project on the Westport River. She hoped to get some photos of cute Osprey chicks that she could use in her paintings. What happened next was nothing short of transformative.

With the warmer temperatures and recent rains, the inland water bodies are finally starting to thaw out. Most lakes and ponds I checked out today typically had Mallards and Ring-necked Ducks, but Whalebone Creek in HadLyme had a good variety of waterfowl, including 8 Northern Pintail, 10 Wood Ducks, 4 American Wigeon, 5 Hooded Mergansers and 10 Ring-necked Ducks, in addition to the multitudes of Canada Geese, Mallards and American Black Ducks.

Date: 3/4/25 12:45 pm From: Cynthia Ehlinger via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Volunteers wanted for MA birding projects- Trustees of Reservations Volunteer Bird Monitoring |
Posting this for Adam Sussbauer. Please contact him directly if interested. - Trustees of Reservations Volunteer Bird Monitoring
My name is Adam Sussbauer, I'm a TerraCorps member working with The Trustees of Reservations in Massachusetts, and I'm the coordinator for our two statewide grassland bird monitoring volunteer programs. I am reaching out because we are looking for volunteers to fill roles in the southern Berkshires of Massachusetts, and I thought that maybe there are some folks over the border in Connecticut who might be interested!
The highest priority role that I'm looking to fill is a nest box monitor at Bartholomew's Cobble in Sheffield, MA. This role includes the volunteer making weekly visits to the property to visit all of the songbird nest boxes on the property, where they will open them up, identify the species living within it, count the eggs/hatchlings, and record such data on Cornell's NestWatch program. We're also looking to fill a similar role at Tyringham Cobble in Tyringham, MA. This is a great experience for birders to get up and close with the birds!
A second project is grassland field surveys, where volunteers would make a minimum of three visits to their property between May and July to monitor fields and make observations of target bird species, such as bobolinks.

To those looking for the Sandhill Crane on Hartwell or Ridge Roads in New Milford (first reported by me on December 4, 2024, and confirmed on the Woodbury-Roxbury Christmas Count Dec. 14 by Dave Tripp, and seen sporadically since) - a request - PLEASE PARK VERY CAREFULLY ON EITHER ROAD - they are narrow and particularly Hartwell Road is surprisingly blind with the steep hill and therefore dangerous - any local will tell you and they have been complaining. Thank you!

4pm March 1st
I went specifically to see my sleeping Canvasbacks, and found them, ad well as two Redheads sleeping with them. As usual, in the lee of the north side shore of the pond during NW winds. Additionally, four Ruddy Ducks were near them and the Bufflehead flock. A great surprise to see both the Redheads and Ruddy Ducks. Frash Pond is literally one of the very few reliable places to enjoy seeing these 3-5 Canvasbacks that visit the pond each winter, as decades ago you could see them in more places and in more numbers throughout the state each winter.
I did meet a young fellow birder there, but forgot his name.
