The light morph Rough-legged Hawk put on an amazing show this afternoon in Durham. Actively hunting, hovering and perching. Perching never lasted very long. Was seen from both the Rt68 skating area and the meadows. I think best view for me was meadows in the first parking areas as you enter. Not all the way down to the model airplane parking. Stayed in area for several hours. Will post some photos on ebird and my FB wall, what a beauty! I also photographed the dark morph a few days ago but only saw it the one time. Jeff KohanWallingford

Date: 1/10/26 5:38 pm From: Christopher Loscalzo via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] MEGA BOWL OF BIRDING 2026
The tenth annual Mega Bowl of Birding in CT will be held on Saturday, January 31st, 2026. It is free and open to all CT birders. It is a fun and friendly event that celebrates birds, birders and birding. The basic concept is to go birding for the day, preferably with one or more of your birding friends, in an area of your choosing. The goal is to see as many bird species as possible within your chosen area. Points are awarded for each species with the point value increasing with the increasing rarity of the species. In general, people bird within a circle with a 5-mile radius that includes the residence of one of the team members, but teams can bird within a town or entire county if they prefer. Birders of all skill levels are welcome. At the end of the event, the birders select a CT-based conservation organization and a donation is made to that organization in the birder's name for an amount corresponding to their point or species total. A celebratory dinner will be held the following evening (Sunday, February 1st) at the Kellogg Environmental Center where participants receive prizes and enjoy a fine meal. Last year, 24 teams participated in the event and over $1200 were donated to the designated organizations. Birders interested in signing up for this event should contact me at <closcalz...> or <loscalzo969...> Thanks and good birding to all!

This morning I visited Frederick White farm in Durham (aka the Durham fairgrounds) and it took about an hour for the light phase Rough-legged to show up, but the wait paid off!
Initially spotted by Dan Rottino over the tree line north of the fairgrounds area, the bird hover-hunted and soared overhead for great looks and photo ops. It was last seen in the area near the skating pond along Route 68.

Date: 1/9/26 6:58 am From: Tom Baptist via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Re: 100’s of Crows Waterbury
The history of winter crow roosts in Connecticut is fascinating.
Connecticut Birds (Zeranski & Baptist 1990) cites an article published in
Bird-Lore in 1933 that listed winter crow roosts in five Connecticut
counties, the largest roost being in Hartford of 50,000 birds and indicated
that that roost was "known to exist for at least 100 years". Believing
that crows were significant predators of eggs and young of waterfowl, song
and insectivorous birds, the Connecticut Board of Fisheries and Game
embarked on a campaign in the winter of 1932-33 to eradicate crows at their
winter roosts and approximately 1,000 birds were shot that winter before
the effort was abandoned. The crows simply dispersed to form new roosts,
"thus outrunning the men performing the killing."

Date: 1/6/26 3:55 pm From: Ann Thomas via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Hartford Audubon Society 2026 Mini-Grants Program
Dear Friends,
Hartford Audubon Society is pleased to announce its 2026 Mini-Grant Program. The program guidelines and application are now available on the HAS website. We are grateful to our members for providing the support that enables HAS to sponsor these grants. *Please help us spread the word about this funding opportunity!*
The Mini-Grant Program helps to fulfill HAS's mission by funding (up to $2,000 per project) and supporting initiatives which directly benefit the bird life within the State of Connecticut, and especially within Hartford County. We hope to awaken a wider public interest in the enjoyment, preservation, and protection of birds and their habitat.
All projects must demonstrate some benefit to birds and/or birding in Connecticut. Past awards have included raptor enclosures, window strike material demonstrations, relevant educational publications, and bird habitat plantings.
Applications are due by *5:00pm on February 15, 2026.* The guidelines and application form are available on the HAS website at Hartford Audubon Society Mini-Grants Program <https://www.hartfordaudubon.org/activities/hartford-audubon-society-mini-grants/>. Applications should be mailed to <info...> with "Mini-Grant application" in the subject line.
*Please share this email* with any organization you think may have a bird-related project that needs funding. This year we are especially interested in supporting projects that would benefit the City of Hartford, so please keep that in mind as you think about organizations that should receive notification of this opportunity.
Please email me if you have questions. Thank you for helping us spread the word about the HAS Mini-Grant Program!

In the winter months, when I'm driving home from the Bent of the River Audubon Center, I see the birds congregating around the Rte 8/84 interchange. Often there is a line of birds coming from Northeast and I'm pretty sure the birds that fly over my house in Cheshire in the morning and early evening are coming and going from this roost. New Year Eve, I was headed home from a gathering north of Waterbury. It was snowing, thundering, and lighting. As we drove through Waterbury, a flash of lighting startled the crows and they took to the air. Snow, orange illuminated skies, and crow everywhere. It was quite the sight.

Date: 1/2/26 9:02 am From: Jack Swatt via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Preliminary Results of the 36th Bristol Christmas Bird Count
Happy New Year, everyone, I'm still waiting for a few more reports to come in, but so far the preliminary results of the 36th Bristol Christmas Bird Count are confirming that this year's bird count was much lower than usual. Our 9 year average of total birds (since we restarted the count in 2016) is 10,137 and so far we sit at 6,350. The snowstorm the day before the count really limited our access to some of the locations that teams regularly survey, and I think the prolonged cold throughout December pushed most half-hardy birds and waterfowl further south. Unfortunately, I think the snow also pushed the Lark Sparrow, seen at Farmington Meadows since Nov.22, further south as well. Since it was seen on the morning of December 25th and 26th (before the snowstorm) it will be added as a new bird to our species list as a count week species. Initially I feared the sparrow may have fallen victim to one of the accipiters that frequently hunt the area, but there is hope that "our bird" reappeared in Westport yesterday https://ebird.org/checklist/S291745735. Dennis Johnston, who originally found the Lark Sparrow, along with Eric Lawson and Mike Krampitz searched vigilantly for the sparrow at Farmington Meadows a couple of times on count day, and their efforts were rewarded with a consolation of 50 Horned Lark and 2 Snow Buntings which are also both new species to our count list. While waterfowl were scarce, Dennis, Eric and Mike also turned up a Northern Pintail drake, which is only the 5th time one has been counted over the history of the Bristol count. Hawks, Owls and Falcons made a good showing with record highs for Red-shouldered Hawk and Barred Owl, record ties for Cooper's Hawk and Peregrine Falcon, with Sharp-shinned and Red-tailed Hawk coming close to the record highs. Maybe some more records of those species on the late entries might push them up to the record. Most other species were nowhere near the records but it's worth mentioning that a single Yellow-rumped Warbler found by myself, Mike Aronson and Siobhan Prout in Southington was the third record for our count. Merlin also heard a White-crowned Sparrow at the same location but none of us could locate that hidden gem.
Hoping for a warmer December in 2026!

Happy New Year CT Birders!
2025 was a great year for birding in Connecticut and it’s impressive that nine birders saw 300+ species in our state. That was, by far, the most people to ever reach that number in one year.
Tallying that many birds takes a lot of dedication and hard work, and it also takes teamwork. The tools available today are a great help, and many of us also support each other more directly, with a call or text about a ‘target’ bird. I think the strength of our birding community played a part in helping those who worked so hard to find as many birds as possible.
Today everyone’s year list reset to zero, and some birders probably listened at midnight for their first owl, or went out early looking for birds.
Others will look at the new year as a chance to make other goals for themselves. Perhaps it’s doing a self-found year or trying to get a photo of each species they observe. Perhaps it’s focusing on your yard or patch list, or working on your field ID skills. Maybe this will be the year some of you will start birding by ear, or work to see every warbler that visits our state.
However you like to bird, whether list-driven or not, I hope 2026 is a good year for birding in Connecticut!
Our guidelines for the listserv are posted below.
Good birding,

I'm still concerned about the effects of sugar on birds.
1. Hummingbirds-
2. Orioles-don't we use oranges and jelly?
3. One web site lists the nutritive value of peanuts thus:
It seems that even no-sugar-added peanut butter essentially contains sugar.
Any avian nutritionists out there to help us sort this out?

Multiple parties add significantly to party hours and bird totals. A very late Spotted Sandpiper was also discovered at Bridgeport's Captain's Cove. The Clay-colored Sparrow near Milford's Caswell Cove continued. All 3 "Euro" Gulls (Lesser Black-backed, Iceland, Glaucous) were found as well as Wood Duck, Snow Goose, Black Scoter, and Lapland Longspur.
Count week species included Common Eider, Ruddy Turnstone, Bonaparte's Gull, and Purple Finch. What was missed? Not much. We did dip on "pelagics" and all of the owls. Thanks to all participants for another successful CBC.
There's still time to help with the few remaining CBCs this weekend. Refer to the COA website for contact information.

Thank you Ernie - an excellent recipe with one, I think, important comment: regular peanut butter contains 2 grams of added sugar (per serving) - I've always understood sugar is not good for birds. "Natural" peanut butter has some but no added sugars. More expensive and oily, but the birds do love a similar recipe I've used for years. Please tell me I'm wrong, it's OK!

The last couple of months, as migration wound down and our winter birds settled in, I've occasionally played human choral music with close harmonies for the birds on Regional Water Authority land in Northford, just to see what would happen, and wanted to share my experiences so far.
Song: Born To Be With You, The Chordettes
Response: 10-11 juncos and one cardinal, previously hidden, more or less immediately popped up out of the brush. I fully expected them to fly away, but instead they kept hopping higher and higher, first in the brush, then nearby trees. The Cardinal and a couple of the Juncos ended up fairly high up, directly overhead.
Song: There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart), Eurythmics, Annie Lennox
Response: Initially, it seemed like the only bird around was a Blue Jay making odd sounds, far enough away that it wasn't clear if it was responding or even listening. Then I noticed two female Cardinals about 20 feet in front of me and 60 feet up in a tree, sitting quietly and looking down. A male Cardinal appeared, and by flying at the females caused them to fly, then a second male appeared, got into an altercation with the first one, and one male fled with the other in hot pursuit. Shortly thereafter, both females returned and appeared to be listening again.
Song: In Stiller Nacht (not Silent Night), an old German folk song, beautifully arranged in four-part harmony by Pink Martini and the Von Trapp Singers (grandchildren of the original)
Response: 4-5 titmice, 4-5 chickadees, 2 goldfinches, a Downy Woodpecker, and a nuthatch flew in or approached almost as soon as I started playing it. After about 30 seconds, one of the chickadees and an unseen Carolina Wren (soon joined by a second) began singing in full voice (this on 12/31), and continued to do so, one of the wrens continuing until I turned the music off.
I'm assuming I'm not the only person who has done this. Wondering what the experience of other members of the CT birding community has been if/when you did...

Dear CT Birding Community,
New Year's is the start of both the Hartford County Big January of Birding, sponsored by the Hartford Audubon Society, and also the all-CT Big January sponsored by the CT Ornithological Association.
For HAS, anyone can participate, even if you're not a member or live outside of Hartford County (but we'll ask you to join if you're not a member! It's a great community of birders). The goal is for each individual to find as many different species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible and record your observations in eBird.
We encourage everyone to help each other -- NOT being competitive! -- and helping to spread the joy of birding. Looking for birds in January is tough, so if you find something, please share it over AllHAS or ctbirds! Two things I love about Big January: seeing other birders out there and sharing information, and finding new places to go birding. Every year I am introduced to someplace great I didn't know existed -- thank you, other birders!
Happy birding!

Marilyn,
Droll Yankees make great quality feeders, some being “squirrel proof”, but they’re not inexpensive. I have two of the “Whipper” model. That said, while these feeders definitely make it more difficult for squirrels to feed from, the best strategy is of course enough distance from any structure they can jump from as well as having a baffle preventing them from climbing up (a pole). Bluebirds nest on our property, and they stick around all winter (esp after a snowfall) if I offer sunflower hearts and suet.

On Sunday morning with 9 inches of snow, I saw my first bluebird ever at my feeders trying to find something to eat. Any recommedations for a caged feeder that keeps out the squirrels and other big birds? In reviewing caged bird feeders, some have commented that the 1 1/2 " opening is too small for Eastern bluebirds. Thanks for any advice.Marilyn Moger- Milford

Amongst the different types of feeders we have: cylindrical, barrel type, caged, moving perches that dump larger birds, I think the best overall is a large one called the Absolute. It seems to attract the most birds from Cardinals and little guys like titmouses, And excludes grackles and squirrels if you set the weight right. Susanne (Susie) Shrader West Hartford

Not big news, but perhaps noteworthy or at least a pleasant little story. Last winter, we noted a partially leucistic male Junco visiting our feeders. Its head was mottled white and gray but its plumage was otherwise normal. We are pleased to report that the same bird is visiting our feeders again this winter. The observation reinforces two points: that leucistic areas persist through molts and many if not most migratory birds are faithful to their wintering grounds just as they often are to their breeding grounds. Date: 12/22/25 5:52 pm From: Sarah Faulkner via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Hartford County Big January of Birding
Dear HAS Members,
It's that time of year! The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to
announce our ninth annual *Hartford County Big January of Birding* birdwatching
challenge. The goal of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside
during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in
Hartford County as possible. The challenge is free to people of all ages
and is not intended to be competitive -- please share your findings and
encourage new birders.
And this year, the CT Ornithological Association is running an all-CT Big
January, so you can do both ours in Hartford County AND the statewide
challenge too!
To participate in both challenges, birders should enter their daily or
periodic observations into *ebird.org <http://ebird.org/>*, the free
birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology.
If you don’t use eBird, you can list your species, date seen, location, and
brief description, and send it via email or mail directly to me right at
the end of January. It must be *received* by Wednesday, February 4th. You
do not need to be a HAS member or reside in Hartford County to enter. At
the end of the month, Hartford Audubon will retrieve all the data and award
certificates and prizes. There are four categories:
- Youth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter
- Teen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter
- Weekend Warrior (adults ages 18 and up who can’t get outdoors during
the week) who must see at least 50 species to enter
- Adults (ages 18 and up who can get outdoors during the week) who must
see at least 60 species to enter.
All entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge
group will receive a certificate of achievement. A special prize will be
awarded for the highest species count for each challenge group, and the
coveted “Golden Grebe” award will be given to the birder finding the most
unusual bird. Please see the HAS website at
https://www.hartfordaudubon.org/ <https://www.hartfordaudubon.org/trips-events/club-events/> for contest
details.
January, 2026 may be a very interesting month and a joyful way to enter the
new year. There are some rarities showing up this week - I hope they will
stay until after January 1st! I've never seen a barnacle goose in
Connecticut!
*Please feel free to share this email with all your bird-loving friends.*
We’d like nothing more than to hand out dozens of certificates!
Wishing everyone a healthy and birdy 2026,
Sarah Faulkner

Date: 12/19/25 9:33 am From: Ryan Maclean via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Re: Greenwich-Stamford Christmas Bird Count highlights 12/14
Thank YOU Cynthia for all of your efforts and work on this count and to
everyone who made it possible despite the weather. To provide a couple
further insights, amongst the many highlights of this year's Greenwich
Stamford CBC, the continuing INDIGO BUNTING at Greenwich Point was actually
first for this species in the count's 100+ year history. While amazingly
both Painted Bunting and Blue Grosbeak have been historically recorded,
INBU has not been for this count. Major credit to the Greenwich Point team
of Brian O'Toole, Lisa Monacelli, Joe & Adam Fasciolo, Ellyne Rey and Chris
Wisker for staking this out along with many of the other count rarities
including Tennessee & Orange-Crowned Warblers, Dickcissel, Red-Necked Grebe
and others. Stefan & Shaun Martin had the light morph Rough-Legged Hawk
from Cos Cob Park Greenwich along with the count's only American Coot.
Emily Keating & Dave Woolery found the Clay-Colored Sparrow at Scalzi Park
in Stamford while Frank Mantlik found the Harlequin Duck at Cove Island
Park and refound the 3 Greater White Fronted Geese originally reported in
Darien at the North end of Holly Pond. Tom Burke & Gail Benson had a late
LAUGHING GULL at the reliable wintering location of Czecik Marina Stamford.
On the NY side Julien Amsellem, Reed Willard & Phil Ribolow had Wilson's
Snipe & Cackling Goose in Armonk NY with Ricky Chmielecki finding another
Wilson's Snipe. In all an absolutely amazing effort from all involved.
With difficult viewing conditions on Long Island Sound early in the
morning, several misses for count day included all three Scoters, but all 3
species were accounted for during Count Period. Most notable for Count
Period sightings was a shockingly late juvenile BROAD-WINGED HAWK
photographed by John Hopkins at Montgomery Pinetum in Cos Cob on Sat 12/13,
which also has never been recorded previously for this count. Other Count
Period additions included Marsh Wren and American Woodcock.
One other individual who was physically missed this year was long-time
count compiler Gary Palmer who sadly missed his first Greenwich Stamford
CBC since joining 50+ years ago. We send our best to him and greatly look
forward to him returning next year.
Our thanks to Cynthia once again and best wishes to all this CBC season!

The cold, snowy start to the Greenwich-Stamford Christmas Bird Count on 12/14/25 may impact our total numbers of birds, which are still coming in, but the total 116 species on count day is surprisingly above our recent average of 111. An additional 6 species were noted during count week. Count Day highlights included some continuing birds -- Greater White-fronted Goose, Dickcissel, Indigo Bunting, Tennessee Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler -- and some great surprises -- Red-necked Grebe, Cackling Goose, Harlequin Duck, Wilson's Snipe, Rough-legged Hawk, and Clay-colored Sparrow. Many thanks to Greenwich Audubon for hosting our compilation, and kudos to my co-compiler Ryan MacLean and all the hardy participants who braved less than ideal conditions. Plus best wishes to all the upcoming CBCs in CT for a safe and productive count this season. The data is such a crucial part of assessing avian populations and the health of our environment. Thank you all. On a somber note, we dedicated this count to the memory of Meredith Sampson, a caring wildlife rehabilitator, leader of the First Sunday Bird Walks at Greenwich Point, former CBC captain at Greenwich Point and lifelong resident of Old Greenwich, who passed away in November of this year. As a friend observed, she was "a force *of* nature and a force *for* nature."
