There are just a few spots left for this weekend's in-person COA Advanced
Level Workshop on the topic of “Avian Hybrids and Subspecies Occurring in
Connecticut: A Discussion on Taxonomy and Birding.”
Location: Birdcraft Sanctuary – Connecticut Audubon Society, 314 Unquowa
Road, Fairfield, CT

If you’ve wondered about things like the finer field marks that denote the
difference between a Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) and the
recently split Scopoli’s Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), the many
Red-tailed Hawk subspecies, or why some hybrids are more common than
others, this is the workshop for you. Our two presenters, Nick Bonomo and
Aidan Kiley, will be giving insight into species such as the Blue-winged x
Golden-winged Warbler (Brewster’s and Lawrence’s), gull hybrids,
Short-billed Dowitcher, Willet, and more.

This workshop is open to anyone who would like to further their knowledge
about the avian world

On a two mile kayak around Babcock Pond, I heard the repeated flight call of an Evening Grosbeak. It was in a particular coniferous section with Red? And White Pines at the southern end. Also nearby Pine Siskin, RB Nuthatches, and Purple Finches. I believe there are trails leading to the area from Miles Standish Rd but beware of hunters (both on land and lake!)
Also nearby in a marshy section of the lake was a Virginia Rail grunting away.

Subject: [CT Birds] COA Workshop November 22nd
Hi Folks,

The COA Workshop Committee invites you to join us for an Advanced Level Workshop on the topic of “Avian Hybrids and Subspecies Occurring in Connecticut: A Discussion on Taxonomy and Birding”. The Workshop will be led by two of our local birders, Nick Bonomo and Aidan Kiley. If you’ve wondered about things like the finer field marks that denote the difference between a Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) and the recently split Scopoli’s Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), the many Red-tailed Hawk subspecies, or why some hybrids are more common than others, this is the workshop for you. Our two presenters will be giving insight into species such as the Blue-winged x Golden-winged Warbler (Brewster’s and Lawrence’s), Gull hybrids, Short-billed Dowitcher, Willet, and more.

This workshop will be geared towards intermediate to expert birders and ornithologists, but is open to anyone who would like to further their knowledge about the avian world!

We are 10 days out on the workshop and we have about 12 spots left. Please visit the events tab on the COA website and sign up for this advanced level presentation and discussion of hybrids and subspecies.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us by emailing <workshops...> <mailto:<workshops...>

There are at least two Cave Swallows at the Kent Land Trust Barn pond,
parking lot area now. The KLT office is adjacent to the Housatonic River.

Connie Manes texted me and asked for a Merlin identification confirmation.
One had hit a window on the office barn and was looking at her through the
window. Tried to get her to capture it so could be evaluated for head
injury but the window ledge was high up. Bird took off after a few minutes
and found a friend in the sky. Both birds appear to be flying well.

Connie is putting in an incidental report into eBird.

Highlights from the New Haven Bird Club 1st Wednesday Walk that I led yesterday were 3 Cave Swallows seen flying over the model airplane field and a Type 3 Evening Grosbeak we heard and recorded west of the main entrance road.
The weather conditions were perfect with almost no wind and moderate temperatures for the 22 attendees. We tallied 63 species in four hours and enjoyed good views of most of the birds. The full eBird list is below. Sherwood Island SP continues to be one of the best birding locations in the state.
Thank you to all attendees who helped make for a delightful morning of birding.

In case anyone is interested there is a Tundra Bean-Goose in Upper Brookville and Mill Neck on Long Island's Nassau County about two days ago.  It was first found at Planting Fields Arboretum and then relocated the next morning early at Beaver Lake just north of there in Mill Neck.  It seems to roost in the lake and then go to the arboretum later.  I went this morning about 7am and it was on the south end of the lake with people viewing from the causeway on Cleft Rd. and me viewing it through the culvert under the train tracks as viewed from Shu Swamp Preserve boardwalk along the tracks.  I saw it from about 100ft. for about five or six minutes until it swam out of view to the south east corner of the lake.  Others had a much farther but longer look from the causeway.  The only place to park is in the lot for  Shu Swamp off Frost Mill Rd. just south of the train tracks.

Hello Chuck,

Thank you for offering the Community Garden Harvest challenge again
this year and for tracking everyone's progress. All the time you put
into this is greatly appreciated. It is great fun and good seeing how
everyone else is doing. Redding will never catch Allen's or Bauer but
it is still fun doing the best we can. Maybe someday we'll have a few
surprises. Many new birds are certainly possible, including Wilson's
Snipe and Vesper Sparrow! Best bird for us this year was probably a
somewhat unexpected Black-throated Green Warbler. It is a great spot
for a relatively wide range of Sparrows. Thanks again!

Subject: [CT Birds] Re: Community garden harvest - final results
Sherman's Community Gardens were disappointing but with a good excuse:  a church is being built right adjacent - trucks and noise all day, and on weekends soccer for 6-year-olds at 9 am on Saturday - again adjacent with the goal post right against the fence.  I enjoyed it all anyway - best bird was a merlin catching a goldfinch on the wing!  I heard a squawk, turned and actually saw the falcon catch the little one and fly off with it.  A white-crowned sparrow came second (no other fancy sparrows).Thank you again, Chuck, for organizing this - it's a great idea!

My wife and I have run the Woodbridge Community Gardens for the past 25 years. This birding challenge brings out all the local birders and really helps make my fall days working at the harvest that much more fun! Congrats to Allen’s meadows and Bauer. Keep a lookout for Woodbridge to catch up!

For me, what was most enjoyable were the amazing sunrises, with
the fields often cloaked in morning fog until the sun broke the horizon. I
really enjoy getting out early as so much is moving around predawn, and
this community garden harvest challenge just gave me another reason to do
so at Allen's Meadow. I did not have any particularly unusual sightings,
but same as Chuck I had a Wilson's Snipe in the mowed grass fields one
morning which was probably the most unexpected species, although on my
radar as I scanned the fields early mornings before the foot traffic began.
I'd say my big misses were Winter Wren and Belted Kingfisher- usually
hearing them well before seeing. Congrats to all who participated in this
casual and fun event!

CT Birders -

Once again, Allen‘s Meadows is the winner of the community garden harvest contest…congratulations to the Allen’s birders!!
No matter what place your hotspot landed, I hope birders enjoyed ‘patch birding’. It helps you learn the best spots to bird within an area, allows you to tune into the pulse of birds through season changes, and encourages you to bird more intensively in search of something different. And of course getting out more often and birding with a purpose also sharpens your ID skills!
My favorite bird this past week was an unusually cooperative Wilson’s Snipe which I found right in the middle of the community garden at Bauer Farm. Photos are on my checklist https://ebird.org/checklist/S282204995
Please share any highlights of your experiences; your favorite bird, a patch first, anything unusual, or even notable misses may interest others in our community!

Subject: [CT Birds] Golden Eagle - Clinton
While doing yardwork outside today a kettle of 6 black vultures, then a
flock of 6 ravens, followed closely by a Cooper's hawk, a red-shouldered
hawk, an immature bald eagle and a GOLDEN EAGLE. It's always nice to add a
life bird as a yard bird. All birds were headed WNW.
Fortunately my camera was close by, photos on ebird checklist:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S282587744
Also the regulars of both ruby and golden-crowned kinglets, a
yellow-bellied sapsucker, red-tailed hawk, few white-throated sparrows,
juncos, a sharp-shinned hawk, and a brown-headed cowbird which I haven't
seen in quite a while.

Subject: [CT Birds] Community garden harvest deadlines
The deadline to add any birds to your community garden harvest lists is tonight at midnight! Perhaps an owl will call this evening if you visit your patch. A Great Horned Owl did the very thing for me last year on October 31st. Spooky!

Admin note: Please submit any October checklists by tomorrow night so I can check the final tallies on Sunday morning. This will hopefully give you some time to add any photos or sound recordings to your checklists.

Happy Halloween CT Birders!

Windsor Locks - between CT River and WL Canal.
Just saw a pair of Peregrine Falcon soaring, they climbed several hundred feet up before assuming that fantastic pose pulling wings back, and diving at an incredible speed. Likely one caught its intended prey, while the other emerged and flew to a nearby tree on the banks of the river about 30 feet away from me and proceeded to vocalize with quite a unique sound before flying off. Normally I would’ve seen many ducks in the area but none were visible, they were likely aware of the falcons before I was. Fantastic sight to see.

Here is the link<https://www.darienlibrary.org/event/author-event-tina-morris-return-sky-darien-land-trust-93304> to the event. Darien Library is located at 1441 Post Road, Darien, CT. The event will take place in the Community Room.

This is a free lecture. In Return to the Sky, Tina Morris, one of the first women to engage in a raptor reintroduction program, shares her remarkable story that is as much about the human spirit as it is about birds of prey. In the spring of 1975, on the eve of the US Bicentennial, Tina was selected to reintroduce Bald Eagles into New York State in the hope that the species could eventually repopulate eastern North America. Tina was handed an assignment to rehabilitate a population that had been devastated by the effects of DDT. The challenges were prodigious-there was no model to emulate for a bird of the eagle's size, for one-but Tina soon found that her own path to self-discovery and confidence-building was deeply connected with the survival of the species she was chosen to protect.

The final full schedule of this year's Christmas Bird Counts in Connecticut

https://www.ctbirding.org/connecticut-christmas-bird-count-schedule-announced/

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual, citizen-science bird census
organized by the National Audubon Society that takes place between December
14 and January 5. Volunteers count all the birds they can find and hear
within a specific 15-mile diameter circle on one day, with the data used to
monitor bird populations, understand their health, and guide conservation
efforts. It is the longest-running citizen science survey in the world,
with origins dating back to 1900.

If you have never participated in one before, this may be the year to give
it a try. Contact the compiler of a location near you to see if they are
taking new observers, in the field or at a feeder.

Subject: [CT Birds] Sunday Hawk Watch at Lighthouse Point Park
Raptor activity at Lighthouse Point on Sunday was most active between 10 AM and Noon. Winds were North but light, averaging 3 mph most of the day. Overall on the day, we notched 9 species for the Hawk Count, totaling 191 Raptors with Sharp-shinned Hawks and Turkey Vultures being the most prevalent species. There were also 6 Northern Harriers, including a Gray Ghost, and one (late) Osprey at 1:45.

Morning Flight was VERY active early with many large flocks of Blackbirds (over 5,000). Redwing Blackbirds and Tree Swallows made up the majority of birds (3,865 and 1,515) with large numbers of Common Grackles, Robins and Cedar Waxwings as well.

Thanks to all of the 12 people who turned out and helped by adding eyes to the sky. An eBird list with all species and totals was added from the “Lighthouse Point Park” hotspot.

Today's hawk count at Lighthouse Point Park was a tenfold increase from
yesterday's. Friday we tallied 32 raptors from 8 species (turkey vulture,
bald eagle, Northern harrier, sharpie, Cooper's, red-shouldered,
red-tailed, merlin) . Today we rang in over 350 sightings, adding osprey,
broad-winged and peregrine to the species list. Cooper's and sharp-shinned
hawks ruled the morning with a bonus broad-winged hawk. The afternoon
brought more buteos (red-tailed, red-shouldered) and over 150 turkey
vultures. The birds were distant in the afternoon, but clouds were
welcome. The big treat of the afternoon was a flyover white pelican!!
Many thanks for great eyes and assistance today!

For those interested in rarities; I haven't seen it posted here, but there was a CATTLE EGRET that briefly stopped by at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison this AM. The last I heard, it flew out over Long Island Sound.

Possibly the same as the Stratford/Milford bird, but over the years there have been one or two that stop by in late Summer or early Fall.

Subject: [CT Birds] Coastal Center
10/22 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 9:40am-1PM. sunny, high
tide-rising, 63F.
Beautiful morning at the Coastal Center-the marsh grass is golden now. We
had many visitors admiring the marsh and our trails.
On the marsh: 1 Great Egret, 10 American Black ducks, 7 Black bellied
plovers, 5 D.C. Cormorants flew over, Ring bill and Herring gulls.
Grounds & feeders: 1 juvenile Yellow crowned night heron staring at me head
on, sitting in an evergreen, 1 White Crowned sparrow, 2 Song sparrows, 15
House sparrows, 6 White throated sparrows, 8 Mourning doves, 5 very vocal
Robins, 2 Northern Cardinals, 4 Blue Jays, 2 White breasted nuthatches, 3
Tufted Titmice, 8 House finches eating berries in one of the red cedars, 9
Yellow rumped warblers ( probably more), and about 200 Starlings on the
wires & in a puddle as I drove out.
Merlin picked up Red eyed vireo and Blue Grosbeak, but I didn't see them.

Hello and thank you for alerting my husband Don to all the wonderful birds nearby for him to enjoyfor the past decades. I’m sorry to have to tell you that he passed in March. Kindly remove his name from your mailing list, if you would please.

10/21
I know there are several individuals on CT Birds who follow Rosemary
Mosco. Recently I received *The birding* *Dictionary* by Rosemary Mosco as
a birthday gift :)
I must say that her humor is hilarious! Between her really funny
"definitions" of different birding expressions to her creative cartooning,
I would highly recommend this book for a different perspective on birding.

Subject: [CT Birds] Re: PSA - Hunters are active
Also be aware that as of Oct 1, 2025, it is now legal to hunt on Sundays on private land for whatever is in season, except for migratory birds. This is new! Since CT public lands are such a patchwork of parcels, and many state forests, wildlife management areas and state parks may have adjacent private parcels that project significantly into or are totally surrounded by public lands, if you were inclined to wear blaze orange the rest of the week while birding or recreating in the outdoors, I would suggest you continue to wear blaze orange on Sundays.

I was surprised to see and hear hunters in one of my birding spots today.
Please stay safe, and be conscious of other activities going on in your
