There used to be a crow roost around the Mobil station on Route 1 near the Conn. Post Mall in Milford. It was mostly, if not entirely, fish crows. It may still be there.Â
Until some construction tore down the trees, there used to be a large roost near the intersection of Routes 34 and 114 around the Orange-Derby line. That was a mixed flock. About 10% were definitely fish crows (slim, slim bills, almost built like a blackbird) and about 10% American crows (thick bills, shaggy throat, like mini-ravens). The majority could not be distinguished just by looking at them. Calls came from both kinds.

NW winds (gusting to 25 mph) continued today and brought large numbers of Turkey Vultures (149), Sharp-shinned Hawks (149), and Cooper's Hawks (200). The 34 Northern Harriers may be a daily high count for the Northeastern US.
Tomorrow will have light northerly winds before finally going onshore in the afternoon. A few hawks are bound to be moving in the morning.

Nancy, although Bluebirds are found in Connecticut year round they are also highly migratory as evidenced by the high numbers we see at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven for instance. So the Bluebirds you saw may have simply just been passing through.

Today's strong NNW winds produced 773 raptors, including 114 Turkey Vultures deemed passage migrants, 16 Northern Harriers, 214 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 291 Cooper's Hawks, 6 Broad-winged Hawks, 58 American Kestrels and 42 Merlin. Highlights included "flocks" of 3 Bald Eagles flapping low through the Park, another "flock" of 3 Cooper's Hawks in one tree, seemingly enjoying one another's company, and a traditional late afternoon feisty Merlin show. The morning flight was similar to that of yesterday. There were at least 710 House Finch and 110 Purple Finch moving through.
Moderate NNW winds continue tomorrow, and who knows, there may still be hawks in the pipeline.

This morning at Bauer Farm in Madison I found an amazing Fall count of 54 species. Seen were 10 sparrow species, including four White-crowned Sparrows, one being an adult, and a LINCOLN’S SPARROW. Other highlights included numerous Purple Finches, a BROWN THRASHER and a DICKCISSEL.
I also found yet another CLAY-COLORED SPARROW - it seems that it’s a really good year for this species and they are being seen all over the state - with reports coming in from UCONN, Sherwood Island and Hammonasset Beach State Park, all within the last day or two.
A notable miss today was Junco, which would’ve made my sparrow count go to 11, as they say, and I probably could’ve found a Tree Swallow or two had I spent more time scanning the skies - but I was too busy enjoying the sparrow feast!
My eBird report has photos and sound recording for some of the birds: https://ebird.org/checklist/S279614718

Strong NW/NNW winds brought in 123 Sharp-shinned and 102 Cooper's Hawks. Falcons were seen mostly during the afternoon and included 39 American Kestrel and 24 Merlin. There was a significant morning flight of Blue Jays, American Robins, House Finch and Purple Finch. Full reports on HawkCount and eBird.
Tomorrow afternoon's winds will be even stronger than those of today. There should still be hawks in the pipeline.

As to how late to feed; well, there's lots of opinions. But, it's worth knowing that there are cases of hummingbirds that have stayed into early winter having their bills freeze in the nectar, resulting in serious damage (essentially all the keratin getting ripped off the bill as the bird tried to extract itself).Â

Yesterday's clearing Nor'easter brought 480 raptors today, including 229 Cooper's Hawks, 111 Turkey Vultures and 40 American Kestrels. See HawkCount and eBird for details. Tomorrow's NNW winds will start out light and then should strengthen to 10-15 mph. It looks like another good day for hawks and other passage migrants.

Since the question has been raised—-these Sept-October perennials are much loved by hummingbirds in Sept-early Oct. The group below is flowering on our property now.
Nepeta (Catmint)
Mexican Sage
Lobelia Cardinalis (Cardinal flower)
Verbena Bonarensis
Guara (whirling butterfly)
Lonicera (honeysuckle)
Asters
Agastache
Budleia —(Butterfly bush)
Above are a delight for hummers providing much needed energy for them in autumn! Hope you can add some of these to your gardens for late fall foraging!
Another note—- flat top clusters are mostly ignored by hummingbirds. While bees enjoy some of the above, give them a few asters at this time of year!! Enjoy!

Definitely the many varieties of wild asters and golden rods have insects on pollen if not tubes with nectar (tiny spiders are yummy!) For nectar, tubular annuals like fuscia though certainly not native here are a magnet, also cuphea 'David Verity', salvias, sunflowers, nicotiana, any of the petunia and calebrachoa varieties - all flowering well into October when the hummers should have gone - and all preferred over the feeders I hang! I think you can bend the "natives only" rules a bit with non-invasive annuals!

Actually, insects make up only about 10% of a hummingbird diet, according to Cornell’s Birds of the World, but there are still late bloomers, like asters, that provide late nectar sources.

I had up to 5 Parasitic Jaegers at Hammonasset today, during Low Tide rising, around 1230 to 300 pm. At Meigs Point, I observed 3 and others had several prior. I'd obtained photos of a light non breeding adult as others had moved on to searching for a distant Shearwater, sp. Later from the nearby pavilion, Matt Male called out one flying East towards Meigs Point. I immediately obtained a photo of two dark Parasitic Jaegers flying together.
I'm speculating, but once observations are compiled the total count for today may have been 10 or so.

CT Birders -
The mega migration event of Wednesday night didn't bring any rarities to our gardens that I know of, but many new birds were added to garden lists. The rarest bird found at Bauer Farm this week was a Clay-colored Sparrow that I found on Monday (checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S277707457), and there may have been more than one since a Clay-colored was also found on Thursday by Joan Smyth and her friend Kitty.
But my favorite bird at Bauer Farm this week was a surprise White-eyed Vireo which I found on Tuesday and stayed at least 3 days, even as millions of other birds passed by. I couldn't document it at first since I left my memory card at home, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bird was in the same spot when I checked again on Thursday. The bird was very skulky, but with patience I got some decent pics. Here's the checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S278173550
Please share any interesting birds that you are finding!
Below are the totals after week two:
Wilton - Allen’s Meadows - 91
Madison - Bauer Farm - 79
Woodbridge Community Gardens - 70
West Hartford - Westmoor Park - 57
Newington - Deming Young Farm -53
Wallingford - Veteran’s Park - 52
Mansfield Community Gardens - 50
Redding Community Gardens - 50
Stratford Community Garden - 44
New Haven - Farnam Memorial Gardens and Yale Farm - 43
Canton Community Gardens - 40
Vernon Community Gardens - 32
New Haven - Edgerton Park - 30
Sherman - Colonial Park - 29
Killingworth - Parmelee Farm - 24
East Haddam - Harris Reserve and Municipal Area - 23
Bloomfield - Reservoir 2, Seabury - 11
Ansonia Nature Center - 0
Litchfield - Thompson Preserve - 0
Simsbury Community Gardens - 0
To see the bird lists for any of the gardens, click the hotspot links below.
The storm will no doubt impact the birds over the next couple of days and CT Birders would be wise to check their local patches this coming week!

I don't think there should be any concern about feeders delaying migration. Hummingbirds need to feed on insects for protein in addition to nectar and I would be confident that the birds move on of their own accord.

I noticed Mike saying he planned to take his hummingbird feeder down ‘so
they move on’. I’ve always left mine up until i wasn't seeing any to help
out the stragglers. Is there any truth to needing to take the feeders
down so they don’t stay too long? Don’t they know when to go?

We moved to Venice, Florida last December after being snowbirds for many years. If any CT birders are interested in birding the Southwest coast from Tampa to Ft. Myers, please don't hesitate to email us as we are familiar with all the local spots and have been birding this area and the Ft. Lauderdale area for many years. We would be happy to advise or guide anyone wishing to bird this area which contains many migrants as well as the native avifauna which includes many shorebirds, Grey-Headed Swamphens,Painted Buntings, Nanday Parakeets, etc. and the Venice Rookery which is also home to hundreds of native bats that emerge each evening. Right now, the Swallow-Tailed Kites have left but they will be returning around March 1st.

Had not seen any hummers in a week, then 3 days ago one showed up and has stayed. It, like other migrants, ignores the feeder and prefers flowers, especially our 'Amistad' salvias. This year the hummers spent more time at this variety than the 'black and blue' salvia, cuphea or trumpet honeysuckle. (Bumble bees and sweat bees love it too.)

Of the 12 species of raptors seen at Lighthouse today, the Accipiterines stole the show. 223 Sharp-shinned and 367 Cooper's Hawks were tallied today, the best October one-day records since 2022 and 2019 respectively. Tomorrow brings insignificant NE winds, quickly going onshore. Be on the lookout for strong northerly winds later next week.
There was a morning flight of 2800 Blue Jays. Many more may have entered the Park throughout the day, after the count ended at 8 am or so. Full details on eBird.

With the winds and weather being wrong for the last week or more, the front pushing through today may bring some interesting birds our way. BirdCast just issued high intensity migration alerts for our region tonight, and many interesting migratory birds will be on the move.
CT Birders would be wise to get out tomorrow to look for migrating birds taking advantage of the tail winds.
The passing front may turn up an unusual patch bird or even a regional rarity!!

Rains from this East Coast storm should end soon, bringing moderate northerly winds. At Quaker Ridge, wind speeds (currently forecasted in the 10 mph range) may not be too strong as to knock hawks off the ridge line. There should be a good count on Thursday. At Lighthouse Park, winds might just be strong enough to generate a good flight (several hundred hawks, 10-13 species). If you can't call in sick on Thursday, there may be a similar weather opportunity in a week.

10/6 Allen’s Meadow, Wilton. Leading a series of bird walks for the Norwalk River Watershed Assoc (NRWA). A fairly quiet morning, but we had good opportunities to study sparrows, and talk about native plants. Found my FOS Vesper Sparrow in the gravel roadway. A Northern Harrier was a good raptor for the day. Birds in general have really thinned out.

10/4 Allen’s Meadow, Wilton. Just a general report to say that migration here the last few days has been fairly consistent with what others have been reporting, with nothing too out of the ordinary (Eastern Meadowlark was a good addition). A relatively decent variety (11sp) of warblers- for Allen’s, loads of Palm Warblers and Eastern Phoebes, a RT Hummingbrid or 2 still hanging around my garden plot feeding on salvia and cardinal flower, and a decent number of sparrows including Lincoln’s, although no White-crowned or Vespers yet. I would expect not much change these next few days of 80’s! until the next batch of migrants arrive on NNW winds after this front comes through Wed/Thur.
Thanks to Chuck for running the Community Gardens Harvest again this year- undoubtedly the best month of the year at Allen’s.

Date: 10/2/25 7:37 am From: John D Babington via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Chestnut Hawk Watch, Litchfield, CT - Where were the Broad-winged Hawks? |
The Chestnut Hill Hawk Watch in Litchfield, CT was a bust in September in terms of Broad-winged Hawks counted in migration. The total number of Broad-winged Hawks counted in migration from Sept 11 through Sept 22 was 158. This has to be lowest tally of migrating Broad-winged hawks at the Chestnut Hill in the 42 years of counting migrating hawks at Chestnut Hill. The recent report "2024 Hawk Migration Report" of the Northeast Hawk Watch addressed reasons for low number of migrating Broad-winged Hawks in southern New England which would also apply to 2025. A shift of the jet stream to the north with a lack of strong cold fronts with strong northwest winds shifted Broad-winged Hawk migration west and then south. While hawk watch sites in northern New England had about an average Broad-winged Hawk migration in September 2025 south and southeast winds moved Broad-winged Hawks west before they reached southern New England. The days of being bundled in winter coats and gloves after a strong cold front at Chestnut Hill counting hundreds of migrating Broad-winged Hawks appear to be over. This shift in the weather also shows up with the lack of rain and drought conditions in the northeast USA. Climate change is very real folks.

The winds last night were certainly timely and brought some migrating birds to Bauer Farm in Madison.
Several new species were noted, including a first of season Winter Wren, a White-crowned Sparrow and an unexpected Ovenbird, together with numerous Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers, plus a handful of Indigo Buntings.
In total, I tallied 46 species; not bad for the first day of the community garden harvest challenge! Photos and audio are in my eBird checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S276700696
Some birds also departed; seen just yesterday but missed today were Red-eyed Vireo and Ruby-throated Hummingbird, but the weirdest miss was Mourning Dove; yesterday I had seven and today - zero!

Recently driving across Boardman's Bridge in New Milford, I saw a flash out of the corner of my eye - a few hundred yards away a big brown and beige bird was flying onto a small beach. Not a Great Blue Heron, perhaps an American Bittern, Pallid Eagle? Cars behind and in front, I drove on and returned shortly. Bins proved the joke was on me - it was a large kite, tethered, probably to dissuade Canada geese from coming ashore.

Today's (Sep. 29) count was decent by recent standards with 101 species on light to moderate NE winds. (We're all dying for some roaring NW cold fronts). The migrant raptors comprised 9 seasonally expected species with highs of c. 30 Ospreys and 20 Cooper's Hawks. There were also 10 Bald Eagles.
Noteworthy was one of the mass Blue Jay movements for which Lighthouse is noted. These are not easy to quantify, but over the years I've developed a system for generating what I think is a reasonable number that's more than a general estimate. Today's number is 2100. I also came up with 540 Cedar Waxwings.
Also noteworthy was one Red-headed Woodpecker, three Dickcissels, about 15 Bobolinks and a few Purple Finch.

Fun reading of this eBird checklist from Saturday, Sept 27 of 4 New Yorker birders with what seems to me to be one of the most exciting rarity finds in US birding history, an Arctic Warbler, seen and well-documented on Randall's Island. No doubt there will be a few familiar CT names among the many who trekked over to the Island yesterday and today to find the bird. Congrats to all who succeeded.

Date: 9/23/25 3:58 pm From: Steve Mayo via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Lighthouse Park Hawk Watch |
It's peak season at Lighthouse Park. Keep an eye out for strong northerly
winds, especially after some blocking weather, from now through November. A
strong frontal passage, a cold front, can be amazing. Coverage typically
starts around 7am, mid-morning arrival is fine on good days, and on those
good days we may even stay until dusk. Times depend on the weather and
availability of volunteers.
You can use 21 Lighthouse Road, New Haven, for driving directions. If the
gate is staffed on weekends, simply say, "I'm here for the hawk watch" and
you will be let right in without any non-resident entry fees. When you
enter the park, bear left and take the first right on the driveway just
past the right-hand side paved parking lot and butterfly garden. The watch
is at the lone tree in this large parking field.
Bring your binoculars, scope, chair, and a camera if you’ve got one. If
you're new to the watch, check-in with the counter or any of the other
participants who will be happy to answer your questions.
Looking up hawk totals is easy, just Google "HawkCount". On the left side,
under "Data Summaries" select "Month" and from the "Select Hawk Watch Site"
drop-box, scroll down to "Lighthouse Point"or any other site of interest.
Watch the weather and we hope to see you down there!

Trying to be helpful, I did some land records digging online.
Based on the online Darien land records, here’s a list of the *probable*
owners of 72 Sedgwick Ave, Darien prior to the current owners (since 2004,
who have stated on the Reddit post that they are not the owners of the
book).
Perhaps if you know of any of them and could check to see if they’ve lost a
guide, let me know and I can try to facilitate getting them in touch with
the Reddit user who originally posted the guide.

Hi,
This is a really big long shot, but there is a big internet effort right now to try to locate the owner of a field guide found in Florida (Everglades) in August, that looks like it has been well used for decades with tons of notes.
(There's a reddit thread here with the story and pics: https://www.reddit.com/r/birding/comments/1nlyc3o/help_me_find_the_owner_of_this_lost_birding_book/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1 )
There was a very specific entry from CT (72 Sedgwick Ave in Darien, apparently) and many nearby items that led us to believe Connecticut might be the place of origin. The person is likely older, given that some records date back to the 70s.
