Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] SDFO New Year's Day pelagic
Hello all,
The San Diego Field Ornithologist New Year's Day pelagic is this Wednesday.
The trip is booked full, at 60. If you wish to be on the waiting list,
Contact Eve Martin SDFO Membership Chair.
<membership...>
Time to pay your 2025 dues.

Those of you already signed on please be at Seaforth Landing about 7 a.m.
You do not need to go to the landing's office. SDFO has chartered the boat
for this trip. Please meet us on the patio behind the building overlooking
the water. Once there you will need to check-in with us and sign on to the
boat manifest. You need to do *both *things before we can board (about 7:45
) Once we complete boarding we will depart. Be forewarned, we will not wait
for you if you are late.
Parking is free and should be plentiful. Be sure that you park in front of
the Seaforth Sportfishing building (1717 Quivra rd.) or on the street as
parking lots to the east and west are *permit parking only *and *may tow
your vehicle.*

The NOAA weather and seas forecast is good. Light winds early, and a
moderate swell of 3-4 ft. on a decent interval of 12-15 seconds. Patchy
fog may be an issue, but we can usually find an open area to bird.
Again no matter how nice the forecast, there will be motion. If you need to
do motion meds, take them beforehand..
I also recommend that you dress in layers, it can be chilly in the morning
and then warm up during the trip. Use plenty of sunscreen (even if we have
fog/overcast), bring a hat and sunglasses .
The boat has snacks and drinks for purchase, but you're welcome to bring
your own.

This is an all paid participant trip, so if you'd wish to volunteer to help
out (eBird, chum, p.a.,etc.), please let us know on sign in.
You are also welcome to bring your handheld radios to relay sightings.
Please be *careful to give a* *detailed location* using the clock method,
then where i.e. on the water, in the air, above or below the horizon,
direction of movement, Give species if known, or general ID such as jaeger,
alcid, dark- bellied shearwater. Repeat and update if needed. We use Ch. 9
unless otherwise tied up by others. Please do a radio check before we leave
the dock. A problem radio can wipe out the communications to the bridge and
p.a. Too many radios can cause feedback so if you hear feedback on your
radio then you're too close to another radio. You may need to shut one
down. Wind noise on the bow, or engine noise in the stern can be an issue,
so shield your radio from that with your hands or coat flap.

We will be back in at 1 p.m.
See ya out there
Dave Povey

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
