On Thursday morning the 26th, the long-MIA female Hepatic Tanager was present in San Dieguito County Park in Solana Beach. It was present around 8:15-8:45 AM or so, with a (returning?) adult male Summer Tanager, along the north flank of the top hill, very close to the ranger's residence house, frequenting a couple blooming eucalyptus trees. As is typical, they were very sneaky, hiding amongst the clumps of veg and flowers, and quickly dashing from one clump or tree to the next. The Hepatic was seen a couple times back in late Oct and early Nov and is now back for its fourth winter, but during each of the previous three years it would be present during Oct-Nov, then never seen during Dec-Feb, and then would reappear again in Mar. So, a change of fortune this year.
On a nearby street there were two Hooded Orioles (adult male and female) and a Bullock's Oriole (female). Yesterday, in southern Carlsbad there was a Slate-colored/cismontanus D-e Junco in Poinsettia Park, 2 Western Tanagers off Camino Vida Roble, and the usual several Yellow-crowned Night-Herons at Batiquitos Lagoon. Also a new Western Tanager in Tierrasanta.
