Today at the Croton West Unit of Shimek State Forest in Lee County, one or two male PRAIRIE WARBLERS were singing in the usual field, which is becoming more overgrown and difficult to traverse every year. I made it all the way to the south end of that field before finding one, then on the way back, possibly the same or another bird was singing near the north end. Other birds at Croton West included WHITE-EYED VIREO (4), YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (1), and BLUE-WINGED WARBLER (4).
Highlights from the main Croton Unit included BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (1), RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (2), WHITE-EYED VIREO (4), YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (4), KENTUCKY WARBLER (4), and NORTHERN PARULA (4).
At the Donnellson Unit were BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (1), BROAD-WINGED HAWK (1), and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (1).
At the Farmington Unit were ACADIAN FLYCATCHER (1), LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH (1), PINE WARBLER (1 along the road to Black Oak Lake), and SUMMER TANAGER (2).
At Turkey Run Wildlife Area in Lee Co. were RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (1), YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (1), and BLUE-WINGED WARBLER (1).
Recent arrivals seen today included EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, RED-EYED VIREO, and WOOD THRUSH. I saw 13 warbler species including NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, GOLDEN-WINGED, BLACK-AND-WHITE, TENNESSEE, and BLACK-THROATED GREEN.
