Subject: [pen-bird] Pigeon Pt. seawatch, Franklin's Gull, Royal Tern
This morning, I did a seawatch from 6:15-9:15 at Pigeon Point. Clear visibility. Northwest wind 18 mph gustingup to 22 mph. Cold! Loons, shorebirds, gulls and terns flying north were close in behind the rock off of thelighthouse. Too many birds for one observer to keep an eye on! Noted were ( 43 ) Brant, ( 89 ) Surf Scoters,not often seen in flight on the sea were ( 2 ) Western Grebes, ( 164 ) Red-throated Loons, ( 282 ) CommonLoons, ( 1,060 ) Pacific Loons, ( 2 ) Snowy Egrets, ( 3 ) Double-crested Cormorants, ( 2 ) Pelagic Cormorants,( 78 ) Brandt's Cormorants, ( 180 ) Brown Pelicans, ( 23 ) Sooty Shearwaters, ( 2 ) Black-bellied Plovers,( 9 ) Semipalmated Plovers, ( 110 )  Whimbrels, ( 238 ) Dunlin, ( 148 ) Western Sandpipers, ( 73 ) dowitchers,( 161 ) Bonaparte's Gulls, ( 1 ) adult FRANKLIN'S GULL in with California Gulls flying overhead at 8:30,( 170 ) California Gulls, ( 1 ) first-cycle Herring Gull, ( 212 ) Western Gulls, ( 1 ) Caspian Tern, ( 29 ) ElegantTerns,  ( 1 ) ROYAL TERN with ( 2 ) Elegant Terns close in at the rock off the lighthouse, ( 6 ) Forster's Terns,( 600 ) Common Murres and( 5 ) Rhinoceros Auklets.
