Already the second Semipalmated Sandpiper this spring is currently present at the salt works on a drawn-down Pond 23, which is the pond about a third of a mile or so east of the end of 13th Street. There are somewhere between 800 and 1,000 Westerns to look through, and the birds are at a moderate distance or farther, so a good scope and lots and lots of patience is needed. They periodically flush up and mix, so there's no way to say exactly where the bird is for long periods of time. Not for the shorebird faint of heart! This particular bird is decidedly short and stubby billed, so it makes it look really quite distinctive if you can get a reasonable look at it due to the stubbiness of the bill, which makes the bird also look extra pudgey.
