Dr. Jeremy Kirchman, Curator of Birds at New York State Museum
Title: Interaction of Birds and Climate at three time-scales.
Blurb: Bird species are adapted to different climate niches, and birds are found in certain places because of these evolved tolerances. But Earth’s climate changes over time, and birds’ ecological niches are themselves constantly evolving. In this lecture, Dr. Jeremy Kirchman, Curator of Birds at the New York State Museum, will discuss some of the ways that changing climate results in changes of bird distributions at three different time scales. At the shortest times scale of months and years, birds respond to changing weather conditions as they migrate great distances to track favorable conditions. At the scale of decades and centuries, birds are tracking our rapidly warming climate. At millennium times scales entire communities of bird species have been shifted in response to glacial-interglacial cycles. Dr. Kirchman will discuss the ways that ornithologists use different technologies to study these changes, to better understand the ecology and evolution of birds.
