The peak diversity of spring birding has got a bee in our bonnets and
tomorrow it’s time for some old school SF biking big day action.
Working hard and soaking in SF’s natural resources is old hat to Cedric
Duhale and I these days. Usually we are doing habitat stewardship work but
tomorrow we will be playing hooky, trying to see every bird species we can
within the city limits by bicycle.
Within reason that is….we’ve already decided we probably won’t try for the
acorn woodpecker. By bicycle it’s just such a huge pain in the butt… but in
general, we’re gonna try really really hard!
The Presidio bike Big Hour route has a long legacy for me. Tomorrow it
will be the first leg of our journey, the anchor from which we will build
list for the rest of the day.
So many things like the harlequin duck and apparently the 3 red-necked
grebes have already moved on.
But so many new birds have yet to arrive. Such is our crossroads of
migration.
Tomorrow we will not be expecting to break any records, (150 species by car
is the SF big day record).
Of course, we aim to be successful. After decades of attempts by so
many we are always learning. Perhaps most significant are the birding
networks that are bigger, more active and better connected than ever. From
3 Oriole species in McLaren Park, to the Tropical kingbird at Northlake, we
have our chasing work cut out for us. Thank you for your diligent,
