One a field trip to Bear Creek Redwoods yesterday, the weather cooperated only up to a point, but things were birdy enough to make it interesting. Highlights began in the parking lot, where we saw a *northern flicker* digging a new nest hole in a tree right across the road. A *downy woodpecker* made an extended appearance, and so did a female *Allen's hummingbird* , male *Wilson's* and *Townsend's warblers* , and a male *black-headed grosbeak*. Other birds were heard, though not seen, or at least not seen well: *Swainson's thrush* , *wrentit* , *orange-crowned warbler* , *brown creeper* , *Cassin's vireo* , and *warbling vireo*.
