For Friday, April 12th, this is Birdline Delaware from the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science in Greenville. The Birdline is the rare bird alert for The First State sponsored by the Delaware Ornithological Society. Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the views of our sponsors. The unofficial Delaware State Year List increased to 237 species this week with 15 new additions, including 7 species of Warbler. SNOWY EGRET, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, PALM WARBLER, and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were seen in increasing numbers.

The first LITTLE BLUE HERONS and CATTLE EGRET was seen along the C&D Canal this week. The CATTLE EGRETS were found at Cooks Farm off Frazer Road near Summit Bridge. The LITTLE BLUE was seen at Greer’s Pond off Dutch Neck Road near Port Penn, Bay Pointe development near Summit, and in Glasgow. A calling KING RAIL was at Dragon Run off Cox Neck Road, along with MUTE SWAN, RING-NECKED DUCK and PIED-BILLED GREBE. Birds at the Ashton Tract included SANDHILL CRANES and BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER. A single male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER with a raft of COMMON MERGANSERS was seen at Thousand Acre Marsh. AMERICAN BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, MARSH WREN, FOX SPAROW and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT were found at the Port Penn impoundments. EASTERN MEADOWLARK was reported at Price Park in Middletown. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue to be seen at the Naudain Tract in Blackbird State Forest from Saw Mill Road, along with RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

The first BROAD-WINGED HAWK was reported in Claymont on Wednesday. COMMON RAVEN and PURPLE FINCH were reported at Ashland Nature Center and White Clay Creek State Park. HOUSE WREN was also reported at Ashland. LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was found at Middle Run Natural Area near Newark. RUDDY DUCK COMMON MERGANSER, and EASTERN MEADOWLARK were reported at Newark Reservoir. WILSON’S SNIPE was flushed by a NORTHERN HARRIER at Battery Park in New Castle.

The previously reported EURASIAN “COMMON” GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to be seen at Bear Swamp in Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, but the area is now closed to public access. The Bear Swamp auto-tour loop is now temporarily closed to protect the wildlife. Shorebirds seen at Bombay Hook this week included AMERICAN AVOCET, BLACK-NECKED STILT, BLACK-BELLIED and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WILLET, LEAST SANDPIPER, WILSON’S SNIPE and AMERICAN WOODCOCK. GREEN HERON along with BLACK-CROWNED and an adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON were seen at the Swimming Hole (Beaver Pond) near Finis Pool. BONAPARTE’S GULL, CASPIAN and FORSTER’S TERNS were seen at Leatherbury flat along with over 40 BALD EAGLES. SEASIDE SPARROW and CLAPPER RAIL were calling in the marsh opposite Raymond Pool. New landbirds included WHITE-EYED VIREO, HOUSE WREN, and BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE. WILD TURKEY and BARRED OWL was reported at Finis Pool. BLUE-WINGED TEAL and AMERICAN !
WIGEON were found on a pond opposite Parson Point Lane off Whitehall Neck Road.

An AMERICAN BITTERN was reported at Kitts Hummock. Another YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was found in Dover on the Delaware State University campus. A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was reported in north Dover by the Fork Branch Nature Area. A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was photographed at Little Creek Wildlife Area along the Pickering Beach Road. LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER and BARRED OWL were found at Killen’s Pond State Park. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were found along Brockambridge Road and Big Stone Beach Road in Milford Neck Wildlife Area. BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER were reported at this latter location. AMERICAN AVOCET, SURF SCOTER, and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER were seen at Big Stone Beach.

The previously reported immature ICELAND GULL continues to be seen along the S. Slaughter Beach Road, along with 30+ BONAPARTE’S GULLS, RING-NECKED DUCK, and AMERICAN WIGEON. MARBLED GODWIT, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, PECTORAL and an early STILT SANDPIPER were seen at Oyster Rocks Road in Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, along with a flock of 3 immature WHITE IBIS. AMERICAN BITTERN was calling at Broadkill Marsh and Prime Hook Beach Road. Lingering waterfowl included LESSER SCAUP, RUDDY DUCK and HOODED MERGANSER. BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and ROYAL TERN were seen along the Dike Trail at Prime Hook headquarters. The first PRAIRIE WARBLER of the season was reported along the entrance road. AMERICAN WOODCOCK and the first EASTERN WHIPPOORWILL of the year were found at Prime Hook.

An early LEAST TERN was found today at The Point in Cape Henlopen State Park, along with AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, PIPING PLOVER, BRANT, LONG-TAILED DUCK, and BROWN PELICAN. All 3 species of scoter were reported, SURF, BLACK and a single WHITE-WINGED SCOTER this week. ROYAL TERN was seen at the fishing pier, along with a big flight of herons including TRICOLORED HERON, WHITE IBIS, GREAT EGRET and 481 SNOWY EGRETS. A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER was found at The Point parking lot, SEDGE WREN and PINE SISKIN was reported from the Walking Dunes Nature Trail. INDIGO BUNTING continues to be seen at the Seaside Nature Center and a HOODED WARBLER was reported at the North Gordon’s Pond parking lot. A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was photographed at Gordon’s Pond, along with BLUE-WINGED TEAL and HOODED MERGANSER.

A lingering RAZORBILL was seen in Rehoboth Bay from Dewey Beach. LONG-TAILED DUCK, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, HORNED GREBE, BROWN PELICAN, GREAT CORMORANT plus COMMON and RED-THROATED LOONS were seen at Indian River Inlet. AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER and WILLET was seen along the beach. ROYAL TERN was seen at Bethany Beach and the first EASTERN KINGBIRD was reported at Bay Forrest in Bethany Beach

OVENBIRD, WORM-EATING, BLACK AND WHITE, HOODED, and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER were found at Redden State Forest along with RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and PINE SISKIN. BLACK AND WHITE, PINE, and PALM WARBLER plus 7 species of WOODPECKER including RED-HEADED, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were reported at the Chapel Branch Nature Center in Seaford. PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH were found in Laurel. PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were reported along Merlin Farm Road in Harbeson.

The previously reported DICKCISSEL continues to visit a feeder off Bryant’s Corner Road in Camden-Wyoming along with ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. ORANGE-CROWN is also being seen at a feeder in Lewes. A feeder in Lincoln still has 200+ PINE SISKINS, PURPLE FINCH and a female BALTIMORE ORIOLE. PINE SISKINS are also being seen in Angola Neck and Millsboro. Numbers of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS are increasing with sightings in Lewes, Angola Neck, and as far north as Glasgow.

A GREAT HORNED OWL nest with 3 downy young continues to be seen off Shipley Road, best seen from the parking lot of the Brandywine Bible Chapel, seen from the left side of the back parking lot. The nest is behind the house at 3330 Coachman Road in Surrey Park. The PEREGRINE FALCONS have now laid a clutch of 5 eggs at the nest box on the Brandywine Building.
