Hello MOBIRDS,

Missouri Department of Conservation is currently working with USDA on research involving telemetered and wing-tagged black vultures in Missouri and Arkansas, though the birds may use adjacent States as well (e.g., Oklahoma). Each tagged bird has a white cattle ear tag in its RIGHT wing and each tag has a letter and number (i.e., A47 or C20). The tags may be visible from below while the birds soar or while birds are perched. The purpose of this study is to better understand black vulture movements, human-black vulture conflict, and to test vulture management tools.

Radio transmitters were also attached to some black vultures. In general, the purpose of this is to study their migration patterns and use of airspace (i.e., how high they fly, how far they travel, how many roosts do they use per season).

All sightings of tagged birds should be sent to <Eric.E.Tillman...> or mailed to: Eric A. Tillman, Wildlife Biologist, USDA APHIS Wildlife Services, National Wildlife Research Center, Florida Field Station, 2820 East University Ave., Gainesville, FL 32641. They should indicate the location of the sighting and tag number as well as any pertinent behavioral or other information.

Additionally, the USGS Bird Banding Lab which maintains the central database for marked birds in North America requests these reports also be sent to them which can be done by going to https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reportband.gov%2F&data=05%7C02%<7CMOBIRDS-L...>%7Cc4c028cf3dbc448f725308dc5afe1fd1%7Ce3fefdbef7e9401ba51a355e01b05a89%7C0%7C0%7C638485294858667517%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C40000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=u929ePGF1zwhC8WXAcIa7%2BT7IRCN9dx%2FeGEzQ47LFZ4%3D&reserved=0.
Members of the public who see birds with cattle tags in their wings are likely to call to report it and ask why they have these tags. So this will provide some information for them.

Alan Leary is the point of contact for black vultures issues for MDC so if people have additional questions they can contact him (information below).

Thanks,
Kristen
