Last night, my wife and daughter and I watched the classic musical, “Fiddler on a Roof”. Those of you who have seen it know that its songs are very catchy! As I worked outside today, one song kept echoing in my head, “Sunrise, Sunset….”. It is about children being born, growing up, and then getting married. And wondering, how did all that time go so fast?
I have similar reflections, about the speed of Spring, its arrival and ending, as it relates to birding. Spring is such an awesome time of the year and our desire to be in the field is so strong! Each trip always seems to be a great adventure. Personally, I often feel the need to express these exhilarating emotions in words. I really do like to write…but I have never written a poem. This is my first attempt…and not everything rhymes…but I don’t “think” all poetry has to?
Anyway, here is my first attempt after the day’s musings…hopefully some of you can appreciate and identify with it!
Regardless, we all need to get out as much as we can ... .so precious is the Spring!!

“Spring”

Sunrise, Sunset
Quickly go the days…

Sunrise, Sunset
Many new migrants will arrive today!

Should I bird a lake, marsh, or stream?
Or maybe a forest, field, or glade?

Oh, what is that new shorebird?
And, is it a warbler that I heard?

Just what is that new song I hear?
Is it one I know or is it one to learn, I fear?

Migrants arriving through the night,
Some to stay, some to continue on their way!

Each morning is filled with such anticipations!
Each evening overflowing in gratitude and admirations!

Yesterday, the trees were bare
Now today, hiding my pleasures and unaware.

Sunrise, Sunset
Quickly Spring passes away!

Sunrise, Sunset
Birders cherishing each and every day!
