Calliope Hummingbird (Selasphorus calliope) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Apr 07, 2024 07:30 by Kevin Zimmer
- KJZ yard, Garcia Rd, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.7064838&<ll...>,-120.7064838
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S167828323
- Comments: "One female (or possibly immature male) seen perched on one of our feeders late in the afternoon. When first seen, it was sitting next to a female Rufous/Allen's that was visibly larger and longer tailed, and which had dark, rusty flanks and a partial white collar on the sides of the neck. The Calliope, by comparison, was smaller, shorter-tailed (wingtips at rest appeared to extend beyond the tail tip), and shorter-billed, with buffy, less contrasting sides/flanks, and no obvious rufous at the base of the tail, which I saw well when it fanned the tail and flew off in response to aggression from an adult male Rufous, which was pretty zealously guarding the feeder. The rectrices on the Calliope were green with black subterminal spots and white terminal tips. I was uncertain as to whether the bird was a female or young male, because the throat seemed more heavily spotted than what I consider typical for a female, and the spots almost appeared to be in longitudinal rows. The Calliope tried to return twice to the feeder while I was watching, but each time, it was driven off by the adult male Rufous, which was driving even the Anna's Hummingbirds away."

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S167848567
- Media: 1 Photo
- Comments: "Diminutive hummingbird compared to nearby Anna's and Rufous Hummingbirds with striking, flowing red gorget rays, short, thin bill, white throat, light rufous on sides, flanks and undertail, green above from crown to dark black tail with white tips on outer tail feathers."

- Reported Apr 08, 2024 08:15 by Roger Hammer

- Media: 3 Photos
- Comments: "med sized gull, smaller than acc. RBGU. Partial eclipse ring arcs above/below dark eyes. infernal dog bust-flushed these too amidst my slow sneaking up for a pic; owners got impatient, I guess, and let it rip. looks like perhaps a more mature, nonbreeding plumaged bird as I didn't see much brown."
