On Wednesday, 27 March 2024, Sheila Raymond, Edward Rooks, and Andy Melnick led an SCVAS field trip to Joseph D. Grant County Park (Grant Ranch) in the foothills of eastern Santa Clara County; a total of 19 birders and bird photographers attended.
Weather and birds were cooperative; singing and nesting behaviors (actual and preparatory) were in abundance.
Highlights were a number of raptors, including: Bald and Golden Eagle, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Osprey, and White-tailed Kite; a pair of Red-breasted Sapsuckers; singing Warbling Vireo, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Western Flycatcher, and Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned Warbler; and great views of Tree and Violet-green Swallows.
Unfortunately, the male Vermilion Flycatcher that has been seen there recently eluded us.
