Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Swainson's Hawks in Borrego Springs
Today (3/18) 217 Swainson's Hawks migrated northwest. At least 6 kettles
formed with some hawks eating flying ants. This evening over 100 hawks came
into the Date Farm. Most of the hawks flew very close to viewers. Tomorrow
with almost a still wind, the hawks will kettle up around 9am or later.
Best viewing along Borrego Valley Rd 2 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive.
The hawks may go to ground early in fields to the west of the road. So far
this season over 3,000 Swainson's Hawks have been counted. It is possible
that hawks are feeding on grasshoppers and possibly early Sphinx Moth
caterpillars. Aerial feeding continues on flying harvester ants.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
