Glad you posted this, I had set it aside and forgotten about it. Just submitted comments. For you procrastinators like me, the deadline for comments is March 20, so get on it!

Great idea, Don. Thanks for the nudge. I just sent my comments, through the Southern Environmental Law Center.

Select "how to help" from the top band. Then scroll down to Protect the Okefenokee. Look for the 'gator.

It's not too late!

The Okefenokee Swamp is a national treasure. I first visited it over sixty years ago on a Duval Audubon Society field trip. I’ve been on several multi-day canoe trips through the swamp, once taking my elementary school-aged kids along. It is a wild and wonderful wilderness wetland and a National Wildlife Refuge.
The swamp is now threatened by a mining proposal. Twin Pines Minerals wants to mine the Trail Ridge, a relict barrier island along the Okefenokee’s Eastern edge, outside the refuge’s boundaries. This would have a disastrous impact on the swamp’s hydrology.
Twin Pines wants to obtain titanium oxide, which is not a rare mineral. Although it has many industrial uses, it’s mainly used for making white paint whiter.
The mining permit is currently open for public comment (see below). If you value wilderness, whether as a place to visit or simply as a place to hold sacred in your mind, write and protest this permit.
Comments on the proposed mine can be sent to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division through online forms at the Southern Environmental Law Center or the Nature Conservancy or by emailing the Georgia E.P.D. directly. The comment period ends March 20 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.
