In browsing my latest DU mag, I came across a snippet that I wanted to share since it is good news!
Ducks Unlimited, in partnership with the USFWS, North American Wetlands Conservation Council, North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, and the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation, provided funding to make much needed repairs to the water control structures at Pea Island.
The recently completed work included installation of a water control structure between managed impoundments (I assume this to be South Pond/New Field, but someone can correct me), and installation of a pump and power unit. Combined, these improvements will allow refuge staff to control water levels in the impoundments to maximize seasonal shorebird and waterfowl habitat, as well as manage for preferred vegetation.
Kudos to these conservation groups for stepping in where government funding was not available!
