It is always interesting to see who is bothered by the fierce wind and
who isn't. The Pileated Woodpeckers don't seem to mind it a bit. I've
seen one both mornings on our brisk dog walk. Later on yesterday they
were zipping through the yard.
I called my neighbor to tell her that I was looking at THREE of them.
Two males were chasing each other around the tree trunk. I was sitting
at the dining room table giving her a constant commentary on the
wonderful action in the yard: "There is the Creeper, oops, the female
Sapsucker just came in, the Hairy just showed up, etc." A Pileated
was also on the kitchen window feeder tray several times. How
convenient is that, seeing all these great birds from the comfort of
your home?
Just now a Carolina Wren was outside the window with some animal hair in
its bill. It may be building a nest in the Williamsburg bottle under
the eaves.
