Subject: Swans
Last night after midnight I was roused by the loud calls of tundra swans
overhead.

Three separate vocalizing groups flew over between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m.

I reckon they must be leaving for their northern territories.

Pungo is about 30 miles east of here, but the swans could have come from
further south — or perhaps they were flying west along the Pamlico using it
as a guide — sheer speculation.

The moon is gibbous and waxing, and was shining bright (about 2-3 hours
from setting) when the swans went over.

It was haunting to hear their calls in the middle of the night, and to
think of what they may encounter on their way.
