Subject: [CT Birds] juv P-b Grebes Bantam Lake
Late this a.m. I had two juvenile Pied-billed Grebes actively and
successfully fishing near the Litchfield Town Beach (limited non-resident
access) on Bantam Lake. They appeared to be full size but showed juvenile
head plumage. They were in dense aquatic vegetation in the northwest corner
of the lake, adjacent to a good-sized shrub swamp that would be suitable
for breeding. Impossible to tell if they were yet capable of flight, but
they have bred close by at Little Pond in the past. Statewide they have
become very scarce (but also secretive) breeders.
