>>> SB birders,
>>> I apologize for this late bird report.
>>> As you all may know there has been a great flight of Swainson’s Hawks this year. The Cuyama Valley has been the hot spot for us this spring. Although it is starting to get late in the season it still can be pretty good. Today Cuyama had at least 12 Swainson’s Hawks, on the 2nd there were over 100 and they stayed for most of day foraging over the rolling hills before moving on later that afternoon. Back on the 31st, 34 Swainson’s Hawks were counted. This movement of Hawks is starting to slow down and if anyone was wanting to see Swainson’s, sooner is better than later. One Swainson’s has already been reported north of Winnipeg Manitoba Canada.
>>> Last Saturday, at Cruz’s Ranch we saw one White-throated Sparrow, One Vesper Sparrow,
>>> Hairy Woodpecker, one Stellar’s Jay and one Red-breasted Sapsucker was down on Alisos Rd. The SYV has lots and lots of kingbirds and the Meadowlarks seem to be up in numbers this year. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens this season. Lawrence’s Goldfinch are scattered all throughout the valley hanging out in the patches of Fiddleneck along with a few singers in proper habitat.
>>> The Golden Eagles are building a new nest after taking off 2 years after being harassed by a photographer that had a short lens that would park directly under the nest. So, this is awesome news. Another pair of Golden Eagles have been on the nest for at least 2 weeks now. There are 2 other pairs that are hard to track down and find out exactly where their nests are, but they are at least holding territory.
>>> We also birded on Refugio Road ( north side) and it was really birdy the only real reportable bird was a Stellar’s Jay that was really far down the road from the normal area where they are seen.
>>> Yesterday up on Camino Rio Verde in Goleta the migrant birds were evident along with local nesters staking out territory and some are already showing signs of nesting.
>>> Good birding
