Subject: [CT Birds] Common Merganser - one pair still on CT River in Middletown
Common Mergansers, 4.5.21 Mon, On CT River, Middletown CT, Portland side, 140pm. Questions: Is it common to have a Common Merganser mating pair actually NESTING here in CT? Just watched a male + female pair of Common Mergs slowly make their way upriver from the Portland marinas / across from Eastern Drive, Middletown, hugging the bank, heading towards the bend in river. Rarely see them here this late once it warms up. They always arrive only on first real cold snap of the winter season here in Middletown, and stay all winter. If they do have a nest with eggs here, would they both leave the nest to go fishing together? (Maybe she hasn't laid eggs yet.) Would love to see little ones this Spring/Summer. B.
