On a sideline, we (as in birders, conservation educators, naturalists, state park interpreters, etc) will need to strengthen and support the scavengers’ ecological role and the differences between them (BV) and turkey vultures. I have worries (with merit) that many people hear “a little” or read “a little” from the farm bureau, etc. and they take matters in their own hands. The situation of the current pandemic (people more aware of pathogens & vectors…)should open up many audiences to realize that scavengers help stop disease spread that could affect their livestock and loved pets.

Interesting that a federal permit program is being administered through an entity that does not have wildlife ecology and management in its wheelhouse.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has established a permit system for Missouri farmers/ranchers to kill Black Vultures causing depredation to livestock. The program will be administered through the Missouri Farm Bureau. See:

https://mofb.org/missouri-farm-bureau-announces-black-vulture-depredation-permit/<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmofb.org%2Fmissouri-farm-bureau-announces-black-vulture-depredation-permit%2F&data=04%7C01%<7CJeff.Cantrell...>%7C679eb7e7ff1340534b5208d8f2bb6868%7C5e016b8a23ed43f5a521168c5e91bb13%7C1%7C0%7C637526236169560179%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=XuYaMh8idp04mUyickuVexkuK1fr00MojXGA1v5snzQ%3D&reserved=0>

The permits are for agriculture only, so this program does not address the problems being experienced at state parks and boat accesses where Black Vultures have been damaging automobile soft trim parts and other items such as door trim on buildings.
