Date: 3/24/21 6:38 pm From: Bird observations from western New York <geneseebirds-l...> Subject: [GeneseeBirds-L] Hamburg Hawk Watch (24 Mar 2021) 728 Raptors
Hamburg Hawk Watch Hamburg, New York, USA Daily Raptor Counts: Mar 24, 2021 -------------------------------------------------------------------
Observation start time: 09:00:00 Observation end time: 16:00:00 Total observation time: 7 hours
Official Counter: Jim Landau
Observers: Peter Yoerg
Visitors: Peter Yoerg arrived late in the day. Please note that although the days are longer the sign on the front gate at Lakeside Cemetery says that it closes at 5pm.
Weather: The morning started out rainy, overcast and windy. By afternoon clouds had broken up a bit, the wind died down and the temps rose steadily.
Raptor Observations: The first hour of the count was conducted from the "Field of Valor" drive, just inside the gates. With the flight farther to the west the rest of the count was conducted from Section H. A healthy flight of turkey vultures with a very low sprinkling of other species. By the final hours of the count the flight was even farther west, likely hugging the lake shore and gaining altitude as the afternoon progressed. An adult bald eagle, a merlin, a Cooper's Hawk, and a few red-tails all appeared to be local residents.
Non-raptor Observations: A light sprinkling of migrant blackbirds. One herring gull and 4 pintails.
Predictions: National Weather Service calls for, "Partly sunny, with a high near 67. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph." Expect more turkey vultures and maybe a better mix of other raptors. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Landau (<landaujr...>)
