For the past several days, the fields at South Avis, albeit sporadically, have been host to some great winter field birds. Various observers have recently reported Horned Larks, Snow Buntings, and at least one Lapland Longspur at varying times. The standout primarily has been a flock of 50- 75 Common Redpolls foraging on weedy patches and treetops at the south end of Maryland Ave. at the intersection with Old River Road.
The birds would briefly feed in the weed patch then frequently fly up, circle around, and land again in the patch. Sometimes the flock has been seen at the farm several hundred yards west of the intersection. None of the birds suggested a Hoary Redpoll, though.
The larks, buntings, and longspur have been seen in the fields east of the intersection.
