This morning I was trying to get a look at a couple of Pygmy Nuthatches that were calling near the gate in the road to the summit at La Cumbre Peak when I suddenly realized I was looking at a third bird — a female/immature-type Red Crossbill. I had been confused by the similarity of the two species’ calls, but once I realized what was going on I was able to hear the difference.
