Subject: Temporary road closures at Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes NWR
As of today, Pocosin Lakes NWR has closed interior roads at the Pungo Unit. You can still drive from Pats Road, through Canal D to North Lake. See the FB post below:

"HEADS UP: Pocosin Lakes Refuge announces temporary road closures on the Pungo
Due to safety concerns, the interior roads on the Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes Refuge will be temporarily closed to the public. The recent heavy rainfalls and high levels of traffic on some of the refuge roads have caused deep rutting, pooled water and other unsafe conditions on the dirt roads. The roads remaining open for the public are highlighted in yellow on the map and include Pat's Road, D-Canal and a portion of Coulburn Road. Once the roads are safe to drive, they will be reopened to the public.

The refuge will be posting new regulatory signs to inform the public of closed areas. These areas are closed to the public to protect fragile habitats or sensitive wildlife. Refuges are wonderful places to visit, especially during the winter season when the migratory waterfowl are present. To meet refuge objectives, providing undisturbed areas or sanctuary for the waterfowl is one of the highest priorities. This not only benefits the waterfowl, but also provides the highest quality opportunities for wildlife observation. Please see the refuge brochure for additional information on areas open to the public."
