From Mardi and Townsend Dickinson: The 74th Annual Westport CTWE Christmas Bird Count was held Sunday, December 20, 2020. A foot of snow on the ground and more falling snow in the afternoon made for challenging circumstances. Despite the weather, approximately 37 participants were out counting birds across the circle. We tallied approximately 106 species on count day and an additional 8 species were noted for count week.
Birds of note included four Warblers. Myrtle Yellow-Rumped , Orange-crowned, Pine and Prairie. Also of interest were Common Eider, Northern Shoveler and Northern Pintail. All three Scoter species, Ruddy Duck, Iceland Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Northern Saw-whet Owl, several Merlin, Spotted Sandpiper, Greater Yellowlegs, Fish Crow, Pine Siskin, American Pipet, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Lapland Longspur, and Chipping Sparrow.
Thanks must be given to area captains including, Joe Bear, Tina Green, Jim Hunter, Jalna Jaeger, Rachel Keneally, Frank Mantlik, Sean Murtha and Jory Teltser; their enthusiasm and persistence helped to make this count successful. For obvious reasons, the annual compilation get-together was not held and was sorely missed by all.
