Happy New Year’s Eve Birders!
I did a bit of birding this morning at the Bubb Rd Percolation Pond, a place I’ve never been to. There were at least 12 HOODED MERGANSERS and 18 COMMON MERGANSERS here, as well as RING-NECKED DUCKS, a single female-type REDHEAD, BUFFLEHEADS, MALLARDs, and CANADA GEESE.
The pond is next to 10650 Bubb Road in Cupertino. There is no parking at the park or on Bubb Road. I parked on Presidio Drive across the street. The eBird hotspot is “Bubb Rd. percolation ponds”, but on Google maps it’s called “McClellan Groundwater Recharge Pond. There is a path around the pond, and a 4-foot tall chain link fence that separates the trail from the pond itself. Still, there are plenty of good opportunities for great merganser photos. I can never get enough of those!
