Subject: Red Slough Bird Survey - Dec. 29
It was cool, windy and overcast in the morning turning warm (60's) and
partly cloudy but still windy in the afternoon. 60 species were found. The
windy overcast conditions of the morning caused Passerines to be scarce but
the afternoon was better for them. The highlight of the day was finding a
Mottled Duck in with a small flock of Mallards. The Golden Eagle put in an
appearance, soaring above Bittern Lake in the sunlight of the afternoon.
Also of note were numerous King Rails calling in various places. A count of
8 is possibly my highest count on them and remarkable for winter time. Here
