Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni) (1)
- Reported Nov 07, 2020 10:44 by Nick Mrvelj
- Wilson River Loop Rd., Tillamook, Oregon
- Map:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-123.8086867&<ll...>,-123.8086867
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S75948578
- Comments: "One first year type seen at great distance that I initially
passed off as a weird RLHA. Thankfully, the bird was seen and documented in
the same general area by Cliff Cordy the following day. His photos show
conclusively, including a shot of the ventrum, that this bird was indeed a
young Swainson’s Hawk. Checklist found here:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S76029885

During my time along Wilson River Loop Rd. two days ago, I noticed a darker
raptor off by itself with a slightly whitish head. I mainly only saw its
dorsum, as it was largely facing away from me. I thought it was a unique
set of characters for a buteo, but couldn’t put two and two together in the
field that it was actually a HY SWHA. After looking at Cliff’s photos, I’m
confident it was the same raptor. As a side note, many of the same raptors
were seen by observers in this general area on 11/08, including the two
RLHA and a dark morph Harlan’s RTHA."

Red-tailed Hawk (borealis) (Buteo jamaicensis borealis) (1)
- Reported Nov 09, 2020 10:38 by Sean Cozart
- Wilkinson Ln., Union, Oregon
- Map:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-117.943449&<ll...>,-117.943449
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S76049948
- Media: 3 Photos
- Comments: "Moderately confident in the id, still some doubt because
juvenile non-harlani Red-tails are harder to confidently identify.
Location, east end of Wilkinson Lane and the field to the south before the
last groove of Crack Willow. Saw initially from quarter mile away flying
low to the ground, making us think it was a male harrier with the whiteness
of the body. Landed and when we came by, we flushed him into the first
Crack Willow on the south side. Poor photos obtained there. Flew again,
unaffected by us this time in which I got the close up flight shots. Landed
on top of a cottonwood to the west on the north side of the road. Didn't
stay long as he flew again, very low, to the center of the south field and
landed in knee high grass where we couldn't see him.

Physical features, from most borealis supporting and down, include the
pencil-thin patagial marks, almost completely unmarked underwings, more
extensive white scapular mottling, white throat, unmarked flags and
moderately-marked bellyband. Because of his active behavior and constant
flight close to the ground, I could never get satisfactory photos of the
underwings/underparts but what can be see is strongly suggestive of
borealis. I will be seeking opinions, as I always do with odd RTHAs, with
experts at HawkWatch International to confirm the id."

bird was on southeast side of ski area parking lot foraging in the crevices

towards the bird and yikes a Snow Bunting not much hesitation or time
elapsed about the identification. i returned to my truck and got my camera

is some activity walked over to where some ski area personnel were
gathering for their day's work. telling them about the bird and bringing
them over to see it they said they could put up a couple of orange traffic
