Hi Rob,
I would also think about small trees that provide larval food for Lepidoptera- caterpillars as that is chiefly what birds are feeding their young. The top trees include oaks, birches and cherries. As far as small trees, scrub oak Quercus ilicifolia, River Birch Betula nigra, Choke Cherry Prunus virginiana and Pin Cherry Prunus pennsylvanica are all good.
