Subject: [ia-bird] Bays Branch - Don Williams Lake and Carlson RA by Boone.
Bays Branch had thousands of ducks and geese. The all white Northern
Shoveler is still there although pretty muddy compared to the first time I
saw it mid October. The most remarkable birds were 18 Greater Yellowlegs, a
Wilson's Snipe along with some Rusty Blackbirds in the North end and 15
Trumpeter Swans.
At Don Williams lake there were only Pied-billed Grebes on the water but a
large stand of Pine trees on the West side looked Owly so I walked the
trails that wind through them and did see one Barred Owl. Sitting at a
picnic table for a half hour watching the Grebes and fall tree reflections
on dead calm water was the highlight of this 75 degree day.
Stopping by Jay Carlson area West of Boone there were 75 Ring-billed Gulls
and on the river South of the bridge two Greater Yellowlegs.
