Birds found on the refuge included 375 White Pelicans, 2 Sandhill Cranes,4 Bald Eagles, 16 Great Egrets, 18 GB Herons, and a single DC Cormorant. Water levels are coming up after last weeks rains and they are starting to move water from Silver Lake into other units. More Ducks coming in with GW Teal, BW Teal, Northern Pintail, Mallards, and a single early Ring-necked Duck observed.. Quite a few Sora calling, and flushed a Virginia Rail. Had several Sedge Wrens, and 3 Marsh Wrens, none singing. Also had House and Carolina Wrens. All six of the common Woodpeckers were present. A few Bobolinks, Dickcissels, and Common Yellowthroats still around. Horned Larks starting to gather in flocks now. Saw several dozen Monarch Butterflies feeding on the abundant yellow Coreopsis in the new DU unit. Largest number I have seen this year so far. Good number of Buckeyes and some others too, plus lots of Bees! The most amusing thing today was hearing a Sora responding to a Gray Catbird. Every time the Catbird called, the Sora would call. Of course it dosen't take much to set off the Soras this time of year. Next was a flock of Common Grackels high in some tall Oak trees near the Big Sit! observation tower. When the birds moved around it would start raining down Acorns! Saw lots of Swallows around the cornfields on the way down. Have to get back some evening and check them out' Later, Steve <Kinderdmkinder...>
