Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) (1)

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S73389643
- Comments: "Heard only bird. First encountered near the springs, sounded
like it was across the road. I went to the location and it called farther
to the east. I walked in that direction and it was calling off to the
south. When I went in that direction it called even further to the south.
I never saw the bird, The call was different from that on the iBird Pro App
on my phone. It was a loud "kow, kow, kow" with the notes at approximately
1` second intervals. It would call 5 or 6 times then be silent and
then start up at another locationl. There were four separate call
sequences before it stopped (or moved beyond my hearing range). When I got
home I listened to numerous calls on the Macaulay Library of sounds and
found an identical call sequence here:
https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/258987521#<_ga...>
In the field I suspected a cuckoo, but when the iBird Pro vocalizations
didn't match, I didn't know what to make of it. The bird appeared to be
covering a lot of ground going south that I could never get close enough to
even get a glimpse of the bird. I had been in the area for two hours before
the bird started calling. I suspect it was just moving through and started
calling when it arrived at the springs."

- Comments: "Found by Ezra an hour earlier. A gang of us viewed it from
atop the bluff near 11th & Flavel. This bird was very likely blown here by
the exceptionally strong east winds of the past couple of days that are
currently driving the catastrophic wildfires throughout the state. Perhaps
it got as far as the Willamette, decided it did not feel like crossing, and
found some nice oaks and cottonwoods near Ezra's house. At one point it
flew down to an elderberry bush, so fruit there may be a local attraction
as well. The bird posed for about half an hour, seemingly enjoying all the
attention. It also lined itself up so that it could seemingly take its
place in the Oaks Bottom mural (see photo)."

- Comments: "Largish woodpecker with shiny green back and tail, red on
crown near and around eyes and white scruffy feathering on the back sides
of neck looping around towards the front. First seen when it flew into a
snag on the bluff. It perched there for about 3 minutes before flying east
with deep, crow-like wingbeats, into a bigleaf maple where Flavel, Sellwood
and 11th converge, specifically in front of the red and yellow house of
Flavel. I found in the upper branches of that tree before it flew further
east into the large bare-topped cottonwood on the corner of Bybee and
Sellwood. Then, it almost immediately flew into the top of the prominent
conifer on the bluff between 9th and 11th. That is currently where it is as
I am submitting this checklist. As is clear, it moves a lot so if chasing,
be prepared to search, but it seems to prefer the tops of exposed parts of
trees, specifically on the bluff on Sellwood Blvd. First Oaks Bottom
record. Will upload decent photos."

Blackpoll Warbler (Setophaga striata) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Sep 09, 2020 08:37 by Nolan Clements
- Thief Valley Reservoir (Union Co.), Union, Oregon
- Map:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-117.785368&<ll...>,-117.785368
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S73390648
- Media: 5 Photos
- Comments: "First caught very brief glimpses of an unusual warbler that I
initially thought looked good for Blackpoll at the main grove around 8:50
am. I search the main grove for 45 mins without luck. Trent joined me and
we checked the hawthorn patch only to find nothing. Around 10 am we got
brief glimpses of the bird back in the main grove 100 feet before the pull
out. It flew before we got good looks or pics. We waited and looked for
another hour or more without luck. Finally, as a last effort we tried
playback of calls and song. The bird came in to the same area we had seen
it in before and hung around for some pics. Small warbler with yellowish
upper parts and white under parts. Clean white under-tail coverts, slim
overall structure. Chip note was clean, whispy, but also sharp and pointed.
2nd county record. A fantastic bird! Thanks for the help Trent! Pics."
