- Comments: "Reported on obol yesterday. Male is a muted scarlet red, with
large, curved pale bill, somewhat conical. I noted dark around edges and
ends of primaries, but other than that, a thoroughly red bird. Female was
like a heftier version of Western Tanager, with very large, conical bill,
sort of pinkish in color. Plumage was quite green, far less yellow than
female WT. Tail undercoverts also quite green, but also some dark gray.
Bird was ruffling feathers facing away from me. Im not experienced enough
to know if the color variation was due to molting. From side, I observed no
wing bars. Both birds had relatively large black eye. Geeding on bees or ?
in mid to upper canopy of trees. Quite active even tho it was midday. Have
a couple of poor phone pics of both."
