Subject: [obol] Re: Chuck Philo's photos of the mystery finch
As many of you probably know, 2nd year male Haemorhous finches
retain juvenile-like brown plumage and do not molt to the definitive
red plumage until their second pre-basic molt. My best guess is that
this is one of those birds (almost certainly a Purple Finch) going
through this second-year to adult male molt. Doing it in public.
And probably having a good laugh at everyone's expense...
