Thanks for sharing this great information on Green Island. I’d like to add a few things to your post. Green Island WMA and ecosystem it is part of is much larger than many realize. In addition to what you have mentioned there is a newer section on the west side of highway 52. This is primarily floodplain for the Maquoketa river and restored prairie. There are 3 parking lots installed 2 years ago for this access. There is bluff top woodland habitat that can be accessed from a trail behind the DNR building or from a parking area on top of the bluff on 500th avenue. The East dike eventually runs into Upper Mississippi Wildlife refuge property. The property to the north is also all part of that refuge all the way up to Pleasant Creek. About midway there there is an access point and parking lot on 52. This is a flooded forest environment that is likely great for yellow-crowed night herons but is rarely birded in summer due to insane amounts of mosquitoes. The DNR is currently attempting to purchase even more land for Green Island to which the Dubuque Audubon Society recently voted to lend financial support for.
