Bullock's Oriole (Icterus bullockii) (1)

- Mark Hatfield Marine Science Center and Estuary Trail, Lincoln, Oregon

- Comments: "While walking on the trail,we heard a Bullock's Oriole
singing. It was in the woody mott located approximately halfway between
the boardwalk and shelter. As we attempted to view it, the BUOR flew
towards the Aquarium grounds and briefly landed on top of a tree there. The
bird's flight was similar to other Icterus species,a series of flapping and
then gliding with its wings folded next to the body. A very distant photo
was taken of the bird while it was perched on top of a tree approximately
an 1/8 mile away. Even though the photo quality is far from best, it does
provide a silhouette that fits the dimension of an oriole. In addition, the
black "teeth" on the upper wings is also visible and a diagnostic
characteristic of a BUORs. Also, the bird in the photo has a very light
underside which seems to indicate that it was a female.
A side note: Chuck Philo told me the following day that he had photographed
a male BUOR that same day at the same site as this sighting."

but could never locate it in the dense foliage. Today I finally saw the
bird. It was a short-tailed, fairly-large warbler with brown upperparts,
creme-colored underparts with coarse brown streaks, and a distinct,
creme-colored supercilium. I saw the bird wag its tail while it walked on a
low horizontal limb over the water. The bird's short, emphatic song was
heard at least a dozen times, and its call was also heard. Several people
enjoyed brief views of the bird, or at least heard its loud song. Photos."
