Subject: “POP UP” LOON TRIP TO TENKILLER SATURDAY 1-25
Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society will host a pop up loon-watching trip to Tenkiller Lake in eastern Oklahoma THIS Saturday, starting 9 am. We picked this date because it is mid-winter, should be sunny, relatively warm (low 50s), and especially because of low wind. The meeting place is CHEROKEE LANDING STATE PARK. (CLSP shows up on Google Maps so I wont spend effort describing.) It is a small park; we wont be hard to find: usual suspects spying on water birds with bins and spotting scopes. If you arrive late, and miss the meeting at CLSP, no worry we will be making stops all the way up to the dam. If you get lost or arrive late and wonder where we are, you can call me on Saturday at 479 935 5170. Otherwise, just show up. You do not need to notify anyone that you are coming on the trip. There is NO registration. There is a $5 fee/per car we have to pay the iron ranger at Tenkiller State Park at dam to access Fishermans Point. You will be able to see a lot with bins, but bring a scope if you have one. We will share scope views as needed. There are a couple of toilets along the route, plus a country store with sandwiches, etc. We expect to see 100+ Common Loons. We have seen both Pacific Loon and Red-throated Loon this winter, but these cannot be guaranteed. We expect to see American White Pelicans, several gull species, Forsters Terns, numerous Horned Grebes, Double-crested Cormorants, a few Bald Eagles, etc. Mainly stopping and looking, with very little walking. The whole thing will probably continue into early afternoon, but you can come and leave as you see fit. The trip from Fayetteville to Cherokee Landing State Park is about 70 miles. If you have more questions between now and Friday night, you can call me at home in Fayetteville, 479-521-1858. Heres some more info:
