we had some fun and productive hours of birding at the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center in Bay City on Saturday, 4 January despite not getting there until about noon. Highlight without a doubt were 2 Rusty Blackbirds. Those piercing pale eyes and that mottled brown body sure stood out. Many birds, 2 Palm Warblers among them, were feeding on the ground in those parts of the slough that were mostly dry but still damp and covered with duckweed. Had a total of 7 warbler species (2 Wilson’s, 1 Black-and-white, Pine, Palm plus the expected ones). A Green Kingfisher was working the little creek on both sides of the bridge and a Winter Wren scurried about in the same area. Found an Indigo Bunting close to the silos and a good variety of sparrows throughout albeit in low numbers. A Gray Catbird perched like a little ornament on top of the mostly dry water feature at the back end pond that had quite a few birds coming in for a drink on this bluebird day. Saw the adult Bald Eagle perch in the tree with the big nest across the river. An imposing sight.
