Subject: [texbirds] Tuesday morning bird census, Hagerman NWR 12-24-19
The morning started out calm and was a beautiful day for late December. As a follow up to the Christmas Bird Count which was held last Saturday we had a list of birds that we needed for the CBC count week. We were fortunate to find six additional species to add to the CBC count week total bringing the total to 126 species which is very good. There were still around 4000 white geese present on the refuge. There were lots of ducks feeding in the marshes among which were 352 Northern Pintails and 230 Green-winged Teal. There were 13 Buffleheads and a pair of Common Goldeneyes in Mineral Marsh. We found a Horned Grebe off the end of Sandy Point. We saw almost 2000 Ring-billed Gulls and 5 Herring Gulls. We also saw over 500 Double-Crested Cormorants and 1 Neotropic Cormorant. We finished the day with 70 species. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and thank each and every one of you that read my posts faithfully.
