Subject: [wisb] Record mallard numbers at Goose Pond Sanctuary - Columbia County
On December 1st, J D Arnston and Mark counted 12,500 mallards (record high
for Goose Pond), 3,800 Canada geese, 23 tundra swans and 22 black ducks (an
under count) at Goose Pond. There are about 200 acres of open water. You
can check ebird for additional count information. Mallards and geese were
counted by 10's using a 20 power Ziess field glasses held on the window of
the truck. The previous high count of mallards was 5,000 seen by John
Romano on November 11, 2010. The birds should stay as long as there is open
water and no snow. Unfortunately for the farmers there appears to be a
large amount of waste corn ears and kernels in the picked cornfields. If
anyone gets photos of the mallards or other wildlife please send them to us
for use on the MAS website.
We encourage you to visit Goose Pond in the near future. It is impressive
to see a "swirling cloud" with thousands mallards circling picked
cornfields or those cornfields covered with mallards feasting on waste corn.
