L here ~ week ago: new county bird for Courtney! new state bird for Caleb!
: heard call 10:53am, and then was able to get some calls recorded on tape
! after 10 min we saw a bird fly , seen so poorly, but was prob it, right
size and shape and some white dots in tail . “This actually makes a lot of
sense, there are a load of jays here.” 11:07a bird seen well finally!
spotted by Caleb in flight and then it landed atop juniper, seen well but
flew just before could manage bin photo : aqua blue crested jay with white
and black plumage accents : “very sky blue and snowy white color with a
kind of black ring around base of head and small but notable crest ,
slightly more compact shape than STJA or scrubjay “. Courtney surprised by
how much it can look like scrubjay in flight through trees from under/side
when poor lit . Wow! When we arrived here Courtney mood slumped a little
bit wondering, Did I make the wrong choice to choose to come here today
instead of one of our other options? & Caleb had responded, “I’m happy, I’m
walking here in the beautiful snow with you. And you never know, sometimes
places seem birdless and then the birds just come out,” and then a minute
later we heard a clear Blue Jay call! — We started hearing it again at just
before 11:30, and then it flew off to SE at 11:29a Caleb spotted it perched
above the house yard S of Collins intersection, which house has similar
forest type to this yard: so, it’s using both yards."
